Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Brendan Bittner

Lady Hawks Advance With 1-0 Win over UMSL

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Quincy University women's soccer team delivered a staunch defensive performance and a first half goal by sophomore Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic) provided all the offense the Lady Hawks would need to dispatch Missouri-St. Louis, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (Nov. 13) at GVSU Soccer Field.

The Lady Hawks (14-3-4), seeded fourth in the Midwest Region, now have a rematch set with No. 1 Grand Valley State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern. Quincy blanked the two-time defending national champion, 3-0, at Legends Stadium in the season opener on Sept. 4. The Lakers have allowed just four goals in their 19 games since then, winning all 19.

On Friday against the No. 5-seed Tritons (12-5-4), the Lady Hawks were able to get the better of the chances throughout the game, despite UMSL holding a 21-9 edge in total shots.

Many of the Tritons' attempts at goal came from distance and sophomore goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) was up to the task, making six saves in the game.

The Tritons' best chance of the game came in the eighth minute when Sidney Allen hit a low driven shot that caught a deflection, but Swanson got down just in time to make the save.

Just four minutes later Quincy nearly got on the board when junior Maddy Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) sent in a long, high-arcing shot from the left wing that clipped the crossbar. The ball deflected back into play, but QU couldn't capitalize on the opportunity.

The Lady Hawks got their goal in the 17th minute on a beautifully played offensive possession. Sophomore Natalie Quisenberry (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) drove in a long cross, which Rief flicked on. Senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) won a couple headers over an UMSL defender and Rief volleyed it past the keeper to give QU a 1-0 lead. Rief has five goals on the season and Burton leads the Lady Hawks with six assists.

The Lady Hawks were able to take that 1-0 lead into halftime, out-shooting the Tritons, 7-6, in the first half.

In the second half, the Tritons were able to keep more of the ball, but the QU midfield did its job in making life difficult for UMSL – playing in its first NCAA Tournament since 1983. Seniors Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) and Taylor Lindwedel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) and reserve sophomore Katie Heiligenstein (St. Louis, Mo./St. Dominic) each played roles in protecting Quincy's back four from UMSL's advancing pressure.

Despite the Tritons' high shot total, Swanson was not forced into a diving save in the last 45 minutes as many of UMSL's efforts came from outside the penalty area.

The Lady Hawks will now take on Grand Valley State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern/noon Central. The teams' last NCAA Tournament meeting came in 2013 when the Lakers edged QU, 2-1, in the Midwest Region final in Duluth, Minn.
