Lady Hawks Season Ends In NCAA Tournament Second Round

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Quincy University women's soccer team saw its season end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as Midwest Region top seed No. 1 Grand Valley State defeated the Lady Hawks, 6-0, on Sunday (Nov. 15) afternoon at GVSU Soccer Field.

The Lakers (20-1) scored three goals in the first half and GVSU keeper Emily Maresh needed to be in top form to keep the Lady Hawks out of the net on multiple occasions.

This was the ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 years under head coach Dave Musso for the Lady Hawks (14-4-4).

On Sunday, the Lady Hawks had chances to score in the first half before GVSU broke through. Quincy defeated the Lakers, the two-time defending national champions, in the season opener, 3-0, at Legends Stadium.

Freshman Abby Pulliam (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka) had the first real chance in the 18th minute as she got behind the GVSU defense on a long ball over the top. Her low shot was saved by Maresh from a tough angle.

Just a minute later, senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) had a long rip from outside the box and forced Maresh to tip the ball over the crossbar.

The Lakers snapped the tie in the 22nd minute as Sam Riga recovered Marti Corby's rebounded shot and tapped it in.

Burton nearly equalized moments later, intercepting a pass in the GVSU box, but her volleyed shot was again tipped over the crossbar.

The Lakers added another in the 24th minute to take a 2-0 lead, and made it a 3-0 game five minutes before halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Hawks were not able to garner the possession they would need to get back in the game.

Grand Valley State out-shot Quincy, 35-9, and led in shots on goal, 13-7.

Sophomore keeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) made six saves for the Lady Hawks, while Maresh stopped seven Quincy shots.
