Late Surge Lifts Drury Over #22 Lady Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 22-ranked Quincy University women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but Drury scored twice in a three-minute span late to defeat the Lady Hawks, 2-1, on Friday (Oct. 9) night in Springfield, Mo.

The Lady Hawks (7-2-3, 4-2-3 GLVC) saw much of the possession early, firing four shots in the first 16 minutes. Both teams had three corner kicks and QU held a 5-3 edge in shots in the first half.

Quincy was on the brink of scoring early in the second half, as well, registering two shots and taking two corner kicks in the first three minutes after the intermission.

The Lady Hawks finally got their break in the 50th minute as junior Maddy Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) sent in a cross that a Drury defender handled to lead to a penalty kick.

Senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) stepped over the penalty spot and coolly knocked in her 10th goal of the season to give the Lady Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers (6-2-3, 5-2-2 GLVC) started pressing from there and equalized in the 81st minute on a free kick goal by Ciara O'Brien from 20 yards out.

The home team took a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute as Mariah Gove pounced on a rebound off a shot by Bertiz Uxoa Ayuso.

The Lady Hawks were not able to manage a shot in the final minutes as the Panthers secured the victory.

Quincy out-shot Drury, 13-8, in the game and led in corner kicks, 8-7. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) made two saves while her counterpart Tina Haberberger stopped four shots.

The Lady Hawks return to the pitch on Sunday (Oct. 11) to take on Missouri S&T (1-9-1, 0-8-1 GLVC) for a noon kickoff in Rolla, Mo.
