#3 Quincy Falls To Rockhurst, Unbeaten Streak Snapped at 10

QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 3-ranked Quincy University women's soccer team saw its 10-game unbeaten streak to start the season snapped on Sunday (Oct. 4) as Rockhurst came away with a 1-0 decision at Legends Stadium.

Dating back to last season, the Lady Hawks had not lost in 13 straight games. Their last defeat came Oct. 26, 2014 at Missouri-St. Louis.

On Sunday, Quincy (7-1-3, 4-1-3 GLVC) was able to gather enough possession to be dangerous, but could not solve an organized back line for Rockhurst.

QU's best opportunity in the first half came in the 18th minute as sophomore Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic) had a clean header at the goal, but it struck the crossbar.

Rockhurst (3-3-4, 3-3-1 GLVC) took the decisive lead in the 24th minute as a shot rebounded off sophomore goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) to the left side of the box to Mackenzie Moore. She played a square ball into the middle to Molly Beelman, who slotted into an open goal.

Quincy remained patient after the goal and nearly equalized late in the first half, but a header by senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) was saved by Caitlin Winschel.

RU out-shot the home team, 7-4, in the first half.

Things opened up a bit more for Quincy in the second half, taking nine shots overall and putting three on goal.

In the 78th minute, senior Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) had a header saved by Winschell.

Quincy's best two chances of the second half came in the waning minutes as the hosts pressed forward for the equalizer. Markway's header in the 87th minute on a corner kick went just over the bar as did Burton's header with just 20 seconds remaining.

Quincy out-shot Rockhurst, 13-12, overall and led in corner kicks, 5-0. Swanson made five saves, while her counterpart, Winschell, stopped four shots.

The Lady Hawks start a four-game road trip on Friday (Oct. 9) at 5 p.m. when they take on Drury (5-2-3, 4-2-2 GLVC) in Springfield, Mo.
