Lady Hawks Continue Shutout Streak On Senior Day

QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 16-ranked Quincy University women's soccer team continued its outstanding form on Sunday (Oct. 25) afternoon with a 3-0 win over Illinois Springfield on Senior Day at Legends Stadium.

The Lady Hawks (12-2-3, 9-2-3 GLVC) have won five straight games while shutting out their last four opponents. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) and the QU back line extended their shutout streak to 420 minutes.

Quincy now sits in third place in the GLVC standings with one game to play against second-place Truman State (11-2-4, 10-1-3 GLVC). The Lady Hawks and Bulldogs, who are separated by just one game, kick off at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Kirksville, Mo.

On Sunday, the Lady Hawks absorbed some early pressure from the Prairie Stars (5-10-2, 4-7-2 GLVC), but worked their way into the game as the first half wore on.

They had a chance in the 25th minute, but senior Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) saw her chip shot tipped over the bar by UIS keeper Paige Polonus.

The Lady Hawks played a short pass on the ensuing corner kick as senior Taylor Lindwedel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) played a short pass to sophomore Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic) on the six-yard box. Rief scooted the ball to senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville), who only needed a tap-in for her GLVC-leading 14th goal of the season. Lindwedel now has four assists and Rief picked up her third.

QU had a chance to add on three minutes later as Rief drew a foul in the box, but Markway had her penalty neatly saved by Polonus. The Lady Hawks out-shot UIS, 10-3, in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the 51st minute, Rief played a perfect through-ball from the midfield to send Pulliam one-on-one with Polonus. Pulliam coolly knocked her shot into the left side of the net from 12 yards to push QU ahead, 2-0.

The Lady Hawks put the game away in the 80th minute as Markway was pushed down in the box and Rief converted the penalty kick to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Quincy held an 18-6 advantage in shots and blanked UIS on corners, 7-0.

Prior to the game, the Lady Hawks recognized their 2015 senior class, which has won 54 games over the last four seasons and won consecutive GLVC regular season and tournament championships in 2012 and 2013. They twice advanced to the NCAA Tournament, going to the Midwest Regional final in 2013.

The senior class consists of Burton, Natalie Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word), Lindwedel, Markway, Maxine Peat (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and Morgan Roberts (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South).

The Lady Hawks play Truman in Kirksville at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday with second place in the GLVC on the line.
