Pulliam Hat Trick Leads #3 Lady Hawks to 3-0 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 3-ranked Quincy University women's soccer team put together one of its most complete performances of the season and freshman forward Abby Pulliam (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka) scored a hat trick to lead the Lady Hawks to a 3-0 win over William Jewell on Friday (Oct. 2) evening at Legends Stadium.

Pulliam's three-goal performance was the first for the Lady Hawks since teammate Natalie Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) did it against Maryville on Sept. 11, 2011.

The Lady Hawks (7-0-3, 4-0-3 GLVC) ran their unbeaten streak to 13, dating back to last season.

Quincy was in control of the game from the kickoff save for just a couple spells of possession for William Jewell in the first half.

The Lady Hawks got on the board in the 11th minute when sophomore Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic) played a weighted pass down the right wing for Pulliam. The rookie took a touch to the end line, nutmegged her defender on a cut back and beat the keeper to the near post with her left foot to cap a splendid individual display. It was Rief's first assist of the season.

The home team continued to maintain most of the possession, passing the ball through the midfield and sending Pulliam and the wings on runs down the sideline.

The Lady Hawks took the 1-0 lead into halftime and held a 6-1 edge in shots at the break.

QU added on to its lead in the 57th minute as Pulliam won a 50-50 ball in the box after a pass forward, and then beat a defender with a touch before rifling a laser inside the far post to give the Lady Hawks a 2-0 lead.

In their last game, the Lady Hawks surrendered a two-goal lead and tied Indianapolis, 2-2. QU made sure to put the game out of reach just four minutes later.

Sophomore Allison Birke (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic/SLU) intercepted a pass in the midfield and sent Pulliam on a perfect through-ball. Pulliam took a touch to go one-on-one with the keeper and slotted it inside the right post for her third goal of the game and seventh of the year. It was Birke's first assist.

Meanwhile, the Quincy defense was stout, allowing just four shots by William Jewell. Sophomore keeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) needed to make just one save in the first half on a shot from 25 yards out. It was Quincy's fifth shutout of the season.

The Lady Hawks out-shot the Cardinals (4-4-2, 2-4-1 GLVC), 15-4, and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Quincy returns to Legends Stadium on Sunday (Oct. 4) at noon to take on Rockhurst (2-3-4, 2-3-1 GLVC), which lost to Truman on Friday, 2-1.
