Lady Hawks Blank GLVC-Leading #13 Bellarmine, 3-0

QUINCY, Ill. – With the regular season winding down, the Quincy University women's soccer team earned a crucial 3-0 win over previously-undefeated and 13th-ranked Bellarmine on Friday (Oct. 16) afternoon in Louisville, Ky.

Senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) added to her GLVC-leading scoring total with two goals in the second half and freshman Abby Pulliam (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka) capped the game late with an unassisted goal.

The Lady Hawks (9-2-3, 6-2-3 GLVC) have rebounded nicely from back-to-back losses with a pair of road wins over Missouri S&T, and now the Knights (12-1-1, 9-1-1 GLVC), who sat atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings entering the game.

Quincy was the aggressor all afternoon against Bellarmine, despite scoring all three of its goals in the final 28 minutes.

Pulliam had her shot off a corner kick strike the cross bar in the fifth minute to start the QU offensive engine. Sophomore Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic) forced BU goalkeeper Taylor Smith into a save in the 15th minute that preserved the scoreless tie.

QU sophomore keeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) needed to make just one save on the afternoon and it came in the 38th minute.

The Lady Hawks out-shot the Knights, 4-2, in the first half, and the teams were even on corner kicks, 2-2.

In the second half, Quincy held most of the possession on Bellarmine's quick turf surface.

The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute as Pulliam earned a corner kick by knocking an over-the-top ball off a BU defender. Junior Maddy Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) struck an arching corner kick to the back post where Burton squared up and knocked it straight down inside the back post. Kuhlenberg is tied for the team lead with four assists.

The Lady Hawks added an insurance goal in the 79th minute as sophomore Allison Birke (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic/SLU) sent in a free kick from near the QU bench. The ball bounced in traffic and Burton got to it first, striking it into the net for her second goal of the game and her 13th of the season. Birke now has two assists on the year.

Pulliam sealed the win in the 87th as the Knights' clearance hit a BU defender and bounced straight to Pulliam, who fired top shelf for her eight goal of the season.

Quincy held a 14-4 edge in shots and a 4-2 lead in corner kicks. The QU back line held the Knights to just one shot on goal in the game.

The Lady Hawks return to the field on Sunday (Oct. 18) when they take on Southern Indiana in Evansville. Kickoff is set for noon.
