Jewell Nips Quincy on Last-Second Field Goal, 24-21

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday (Oct. 10) afternoon as Brandon Womack's 28-yard field goal sailed through the uprights to give William Jewell a 24-21 win over the Hawks at QU Stadium.

The Cardinals (2-4, 2-2 GLVC) got the ball on their own 49-yard line with 3:09 to play and ran the ball seven straight times to set themselves up at the Quincy 12-yard line with four seconds remaining. A WJC timeout stopped the clock before QU head coach Tom Pajic called two consecutive timeouts to ice the junior kicker, but Womack's line drive from 28 yards sailed through to give the Cardinals a win on the final play.

The Hawks (2-3, 2-2 GLVC) held the lead for nearly three full quarters until the Cardinals tied the game with 14:18 remaining.

The QU offense started quickly. Fifth-year senior Nick Lonergan (Jacksonville, Ill.) connected on consecutive plays with former high school teammate Kody Wood (Jacksonville, Ill.) to get into William Jewell territory.

After an eight-yard rush by sophomore Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin), Lonergan launched a jump ball that junior Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick) hauled in over a defender for a 40-yard touchdown. The extra point gave the Hawks a quick 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

The QU defense was impressive early, forcing consecutive three-and-outs. On the next WJC drive, sophomore Jacob Lounsberry (Sherman, Ill./Williamsville) pounced on a batted pass, getting his fingertips under the ball for his first career interception to set the Hawks up inside the red zone.

Three plays later, Harris pounded his way through the middle on an eight-yard touchdown run to stretch QU's lead to 14-0.

The Cardinals converted a pair of third downs and scored and Trejuan Mask scored from three yards out to cut Quincy's lead in half, 14-7, with 14:11 remaining in the first half.

The Hawks responded with a seven-play, 70-yard drive that was capped by Poindexter's catch on a perfect 43-yard throw from Lonergan, who dropped it right into his wide receiver's hands with a defender draped on him. That gave the Hawks a 21-7 advantage.

The defense got three more stops to end the half as the Hawks looked to be in command. QU drove to the William Jewell 26-yard line with 38 seconds remaining in the half, but redshirt-freshman Brent Arthur (Brights Grove, Ont./Sarnia North) missed a field goal from 43 yards.

Quincy out-gained William Jewell, 272-146, in the first half and the defense held WJC to just eight yards on the ground.

Redshirt-freshman linebacker T.J. Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis University HS) picked off Nick West's pass on the Cardinals' opening drive of the second half, but the Hawks' drive stalled at the Jewell 38-yard line.

Reigning GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week Mason Murray (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) pinned the Cardinals at their own 2-yard line with a punt, but the visitors took it 98 yards in four minutes and three seconds to cut QU's lead to 21-14. West's 47-yard touchdown pass to Nate Egharevba capped the drive.

Lonergan was intercepted for just the fourth time this season on the Hawks' next drive, and the Cards capitalized with a Thomas Cook one-yard touchdown run that tied the game at 21-21.

The teams traded punts before the Cardinals got the ball back with 3:09 to play. Darrick Strzelecki and Mask rushed seven consecutive times, picking up three first downs to get into prime field goal range for Womack, who ended the game with his kick.

The Cardinals held the Hawks to just 95 offensive yards in the second half, and out-gained the hosts for the game, 388-367. William Jewell was 7-for-13 on third downs, while the Hawks converted just 3-of-11.

Lonergan was 13-for-24 through the air for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once and sacked three times.

Poindexter was his top target, catching five passes for 108 yards and two scores. He has three games with at least 100 yards receiving and entered the game ranked seventh in the nation in receiving yards per game.

Harris rushed for 108 yards on 24 carries, including a touchdown. It was the second time this season he has hit the century mark.

Daniels led the defense with nine tackles and an interception. Junior defensive end Tanner Day (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) finished with eight tackles, three for loss, and two of QU's four sacks on the day. Lounsberry had seven tackles (two for loss), a sack, an interception and a forced fumble.

West was 21-for-33 throwing the ball for 285 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted twice. Egharevba caught nine passes for 98 yards and a score.

The Hawks hit the road next Saturday to take on three-time defending GLVC champion Indianapolis (5-1, 3-0 GLVC). The Greyhounds stand as the only unbeaten team in conference play. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. CT.
