UIndy Holds Off Late QU Charge, 26-20

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team made a late charge, but Indianapolis held off the Hawks, 26-20, on Saturday (Oct. 17) night at Key Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Greyhounds (6-1, 4-0 GLVC) remained undefeated in conference play this season and improved to 26-1 all-time against GLVC competition. UIndy has won all three GLVC football championships.

The Hawks (2-4, 2-3 GLVC) trailed, 26-14, with 9:04 to play after the defense held for three straight plays at its own 1-yard line to force UIndy to kick a field goal.

The offense was forced to punt on its next possession, but UIndy returner Malik Higgins muffed the fair catch and senior fullback Greg Eilerman (Fenton, Mo./St. John Vianney) fell on the loose ball to set up the Hawks in the red zone.

The 'Hounds were whistled for a pass interference on 4th-and-14, and two plays later, fifth-year senior quarterback Nick Lonergan (Jacksonville, Ill.) connected with junior wideout De'Carlos Poole (Springfield, Ill.) on a nine-yard touchdown to cut the UIndy lead to 26-20 after the Hawks' point-after kick was blocked.

The Greyhounds started their next drive with 4:38 remaining with the Hawks needing a stop. Quincy forced a third down on the first series, but Conner Barthel hit Reece Horn on a 12-yard pass play to extend the drive. The hosts would go one to pick up two more first downs to secure the win.

QU's much-maligned defense kept the team in the game on several occasions, despite turnovers that dealt UIndy short fields.

On the first possession of the game, the Greyhounds marched 60 yards in 10 plays, but the Hawks held their ground inside the 5-yard line and forced Brad Schickel to kick a 20-yard field goal.

The Hawks responded with a lengthy drive of their own, going 75 yards in 13 plays before Lonergan hit junior wide receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College) on a five-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone to give Quincy a 7-3 lead.

The QU defense forced a three-and-out on the next UIndy possession, but the Hawks fumbled on their next series and gave the ball to the Greyhounds at the QU 20.

Barthel's 14-yard pass to Alex Kimack regained the lead for Indianapolis, 10-7.

The Hawks fumbled a handoff on the first play after the ensuing kickoff that led to prime field position and a three-yard rushing touchdown by Andrew Walker for the Greyhounds, who led 16-7 with 12:02 left in the second quarter.

After the Hawks punted again, the Greyhounds drove 90 yards in seven plays, the possession capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Tuwan Payton that pushed UIndy's lead to 23-7 with 6:50 remaining in the second quarter.

That would be the last touchdown scored by Indianapolis as the QU defense proved steady. The Hawks would force a three-and-out on UIndy's next possession to give QU the ball with just under three minutes remaining in the first half.

The Hawks converted two third downs, and then on 4th-and-goal from the 5-yard line, Lonergan hit Poindexter for their second scoring connection of the game to cut the deficit to 23-14 heading into halftime.

The Hawks chewed up the first eight minutes, 19 seconds in the second half, but were forced to punt as Lonergan's kick pinned the hosts at their own 4-yard line.

The Greyhounds drove it to the QU 20-yard line on their next drive, but senior linebacker Zach Vath (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale) popped the ball loose and sophomore linebacker Nate Rueckemann (McHenry, Ill.) beat everyone to it to cover it up.

After the Hawks punted, UIndy drove 67 yards on 13 plays before the Hawks made a goal line stand on three straight plays to force Schickel's 17-yard field goal.

That set up QU's final touchdown drive that trimmed the deficit to 26-20.

The Greyhounds out-gained the Hawks, 378-237. The QU defense has now held two straight opponents to less than 400 yards of offense.

Lonergan was 16-for-28 for 131 yards and three touchdowns. He did not throw an interception, but was sacked four times.

Poindexter was his top target, catching seven passes for 42 yards and two scores.

Freshman running back Cobi Bissell (Blue Springs, Mo.) led the QU rushing attack with 58 yards on 15 carries. Senior Dante Flowers (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) returned after missing three straight games with hand injury, rushing for 35 yards on eight carries.

Walker gained 107 yards on 19 rushes for the Greyhounds, including 40 on the final drive that ran the clock out. He had one rushing touchdown.

Barthel was 14-for-23 for 176 yards through the air with one touchdown pass. Horn caught six passes for 72 yards.

Redshirt-freshman linebacker T.J. Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) led the Hawks with 11 tackles, while freshman safety Shane Barrett (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) made 10 stops in his collegiate debut.

The Hawks return to the field next Saturday (Oct. 24) when they take on Ohio Dominican (4-3) at 1 p.m. in nonconference action at QU Stadium.
