Panthers Down Hawks at QU Stadium

QUINCY, Ill. – The Ohio Dominican Panthers scored touchdowns on their first nine possessions as the visitors defeated the Quincy University football team, 73-28, at QU Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 24) afternoon.

The Panthers (5-3) out-gained the Hawks (2-5), 582-354, on the way to their 33rd straight win over unranked opponents.

Ohio Dominican, which advanced to the national quarterfinal last season, led 21-0 after 10-plus minutes before the Hawks got on the board in the final minute of the first quarter. On 4th-and-4, senior Dante Flowers (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) sprinted 44 yards around the right side to put QU on the board.

The Hawks scored on their next possession as sophomore Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) scampered around the right side and beat the defense to the corner to cut ODU's lead to 28-14. Harris has now scored a rushing touchdown in all six games he has played this season.

After Darryl Johnson scored on a 49-yard rushing touchdown, the Hawks responded as fifth-year senior Nick Lonergan (Jacksonville, Ill.) connected with a wide open De'Carlos Poole (Springfield, Ill.) in the back of the end zone from 25 yards to cut the deficit to 35-21.

The Panthers would score on their final drive of the first half and lead, 42-21, at the break.

Ohio Dominican put the game away by scoring the first three touchdowns of the second half.

The Hawks were doomed by five turnovers, finishing with a minus-4 in that category in the game.

The QU running game was solid, picking up 205 yards on the ground, led by Flowers' 104 on seven carries. Harris ran the ball 10 times for 62 yards.

Johnson ran for five touchdowns and produced 107 yards on the ground for the Panthers. As a team, Ohio Dominican was 26-for-34 through the air. Starter Grant Russell was 19-for-24 for 293 yards and two touchdowns. Dez Stewart caught nine passes for 108 yards, leading nine different Panthers with a reception.

Lonergan was 9-for-23 for 110 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Sophomore Brendan Saak (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) caught two passes for 47 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.

Redshirt-freshman linebacker T.J. Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS), freshman linebacker Clayton Cole (Weatherby Lake, Mo./Park Hill), and freshman safety Shane Barrett (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) led the Hawks with nine tackles apiece. Sophomore Adehkeem Brown (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) forced the only turnover of the game, intercepting an Austin Ernst pass in the fourth quarter.

O'Sha Jackson led the Panthers with eight tackles and also intercepted three passes.

The Hawks will return QU Stadium next Saturday (Oct. 31) at 11 a.m. when they take on Truman State in a game that will be televised nationally on the American Sports Network.
