Hawks' Hot Shooting Lifts Quincy to First GLVC Win

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team showed a recipe for success on Thursday (Jan. 8) night as the Hawks shot 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) from 3-point range on their way to an 87-76 win over Illinois Springfield at the TRAC.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid and gave Quincy (7-7, 1-3 GLVC) its first conference win of the season.

The Hawks also used their transition game to much success, leading in fast-break points, 18-2. Quincy thrived in that realm as junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central) threw down three slams on the fastbreak, including one on a terrific lob from sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast), who played in front of a large hometown contingent.

Eneogwe led the Hawks with 17 points – 12 coming in the first half – on 7-of-10 shooting. Senor II had a terrific floor game as well with 12 points, six rebounds, a career-high seven assists and two steals.

The Hawks moved the ball very well on Thursday, helping them shoot 59.6 percent (31-for-52) from the field. They had 22 assists on their 31 made field goals.

Quincy opened the game with 13-4 run, capped by a three-point play by Eneogwe, and never trailed. The Hawks led by as many as 21, 45-24, after a 3-pointer by senior guard Ja'mil Jones ( Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC) with 3:40 left in the first half.

The Hawks led 48-32 at halftime after knocking down six 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes.

That double-digit lead held for almost the entire second half as the Hawks answered every UIS run. Quincy limited the Prairie Starts (6-5, 0-3 GLVC) to just 41.3 percent (26-for-63) shooting in the game.

QU had a 35-31 edge on the glass and junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) had three of the Hawks' five blocks.

Junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) had 12 points, five assists and three rebounds. Senior guard Scott Hahn (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa) finished with 10 points in 18 minutes off the bench to lead the Hawks reserves to 36 points.

Mark Weems led the Prairie Stars with 20 points and five rebounds with Davi Austin adding 16 points and five assists.

The Hawks will look to sweep the weekend on Saturday (Jan. 10) when they travel to McKendree for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
