McKendree Outlasts Hawks in GLVC Action

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team played well enough offensively to get a win on Saturday (Jan. 10), but it was on the defensive end that McKendree was able to exploit the Hawks to pick up the host's first GLVC win of the season, 88-84, at the Statham Center in Lebanon, Ill. on Saturday (Jan. 10).

The Hawks (7-8, 1-4 GLVC) shot 47 percent (31-for-66) from the field in the game, but McKendree (7-4, 1-3 GLVC) connected at a 50 percent clip (29-for-58) and went 24-for-27 (88.9 percent) from the free throw line to come away with the win.

Redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) led four Hawks in double figures with 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) scored 15 points, pulled down five rebounds and blocked a career-high five shots in just 16 minutes.

The Bearcats led by as many as seven in the first half, but the Hawks went on an 8-2 run over the final 90 seconds before halftime, getting six points from McGaughey, to take a 47-45 lead into the break.

The Hawks continued their run into the second half as McGaughey scored in transition off a pass from sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) that gave the visitors a 55-49 lead. Later, the Hawks led by seven on two separate occasions, after a 3-pointer by senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC) and a mid-range jumper by Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) with 12:41 left, but the Bearcats would not go away.

Bruxvoort's dunk on the Hawks' next possession would be their last field goal for more than three minutes, but Quincy maintained a 66-62 lead after Hoover knocked down a jumper with 8:33 left.

The Bearcats went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the half on a 3-pointer by Brandon Book, who finished with a game-high 29 points, including five threes.

The Hawks would not retake the lead after that point. Book hit another trey to make it 71-68, though junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) tied it, 75-75, with 3:33 to play with a couple of free throws.

The Hawks missed their next three field goals before Senor's runner with 45 seconds left cut the McKendree lead to 82-79. After Carson Logan hit two free throws, Des Jardins came back to knock down a 3-pointer to make it 84-82. Book scored on a layup after the Hawks were not able to foul with 16 seconds left.

With 11 seconds left, Bruxvoort scored on a put-back to cut it to 86-84, but Kyle Yates hit two more free throws to put the game away in the final seconds. The Bearcats were 11-for-12 from the line in the final three minutes to help dispatch the Hawks.

Senor II finished with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists and Jones scored 10 points to go with three assists in 18 minutes off the bench.

John Murphy had 16 points for McKendree and was the only other player other than Book to sink a 3-pointer for the Bearcats. Matt Holmes had 14 points and Michael Jackson finished with 13.

McKendree had a 36-35 edge on the glass with the Hawks tied a season-high with eight blocks in the game.

The Hawks will look for their second conference win on Thursday (Jan. 15) when they travel to Maryville for the first of two meetings with the Saints. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in St. Louis.
