Hawks Drop Heartbreaker in Final Second

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Maryville in GLVC West action Thursday (Jan. 15) night at Moloney Arena in St. Louis, 77-76.

The Hawks (7-9, 1-5 GLVC) led by two points, 75-73, when sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) ripped away a steal and junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) was fouled with 27 seconds left. Des Jardins split the pair at the line before Trae Pemberton knocked down a couple free throws with 13 seconds left to cut it to 76-75.

The Saints (9-5, 4-1 GLVC) fouled immediately on the inbound, but the Hawks missed both free throws leading to one final possession for the hosts. Josh Montague attempted a rushed corner 3-pointer and missed, but Max Mischkulnig got to the rebound first and tipped it in, fractions of a second before the buzzer sounded to give Maryville the win.

The game was tight for the entirety of the second half with neither team holding more than a four-point lead.

Quincy trailed for most of the first half. The Saints led by as many as 14 points, but the Hawks closed the half with a flurry, going on a 19-3 run over the final five minutes to take a 43-41 lead into halftime. Quincy forced four turnovers and the Saints were 1-for-6 from the field in that stretch.

Maryville made seven 3-pointers in the first half and the Hawks stayed in the game by converting at the free throw line. They were 11-for-14 (78.6 percent) in the first half. Quincy attempted 33 free throws in the game, while the Saints managed just nine.

Five players scored in double figures for Quincy, led by junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State), who dropped a season-high 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting.

Senor II maintained his steady play over the last three games, scoring 14 points and dishing out six assists. Redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds and junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) had 13 points and seven boards. Des Jardins was the final QU player in double figures with 11 points.

The Hawks shot 45.1 percent (23-for-51) from the field, including seven 3-pointers. The Saints, though, connected on 49.2 percent (29-for-59) from the field and knocked down 11 threes.

Pemberton had a game-high 26 points and was 6-for-9 from 3-point range. Mischkulnig added 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting.
