UW-Parkside Too Much For Hawks in Second Half

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team saw a nine-point lead evaporate just before halftime and UW-Parkside never surrendered its second half advantage in a 77-64 win over the Hawks in GLVC action at Pepsi Arena on Sunday (Jan. 4) afternoon.

The Hawks (6-7, 0-3 GLVC) used a 15-2 run over a seven-minute stretch in the first half to take a 26-17 lead over the Rangers (10-1, 2-0 GLVC), who were receiving votes in this week's NABC Division II coaches poll.

UW-Parkside countered with a 9-0 run over the final two minutes of the first half – with six points coming from Kendale McCullum – to take a 32-30 lead into halftime.

The Rangers quickly made it 42-32 early in the second half, but Quincy stayed in the game, cutting the deficit to 46-42 with 12:40 left on a put-back by redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe).

Redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) cut the lead to 53-50 on a free throw with just under seven minutes to play, but that was as close as the Hawks could get.

The Hawks had it down to six points, 65-59, with 1:29 to play, but the Hawks missed on a free throw opportunity that could have cut it to four. Quincy shot just 5-for-10 from the free throw line, while the Rangers were perfect on 20 attempts.

McGaughey was the only player in double figures for the Hawks, scoring 15 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Bruxvoort, junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) and sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) had nine points apiece. Ten players scored for Quincy, which matched UWP by shooting 43.5 percent (27-for-62) from the field.

Zygimantas Riauka recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Parkside, while Andy Mazurczak scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half.

The Hawks return to the court on Thursday (Jan. 8) at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Illinois Springfield (6-4, 0-2 GLVC).
