No. 10 IPFW Takes Three-Set Match From Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – For the second straight night, the Quincy University men's volleyball team faced off against a nationally-ranked Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association team as the Hawks fell to No. 10 IPFW, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-21), on Saturday (Jan. 31) night in Fort Wayne, Ind.
 
The Hawks (5-4, 0-2 MIVA) hit .169 as a team, while the Mastodons (7-2, 2-0 MIVA) hit .309 on their way to the win.
 
Offensively, the Hawks were led by junior opposite hitter Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central), who finished the match with six kills (.545) on 11 swings with no errors to go with a block and an ace. Junior outside hitter Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) also had six kills (.231).
 
IPFW hit .412 in the first set, committing just three errors and getting four kills each from Nick Smalter and Ramon Burgos. The Hawks still managed to hit .250 in the set with three kills on three attacks by sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby). Kelso finished with five kills and two blocks in the match. He also had one of Quincy's two service aces.
 
In Set 2, the Hawks and Mastodons were tied, 3-3, before the hosts reeled off four straight points to take a 7-3 lead they would not give up. In Set 3, the Hawks trailed 22-17 before scoring four straight points – the last on an ace by Gamache that cut the deficit to 22-21 to force IPFW to call a timeout. The 'Dons scored the last three points of the match to secure the win in straight sets.
 
Junior outside hitter Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) had four kills in the third set. Redshirt-junior setter Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) had 14 assists and freshman Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./St. Pius X) had a match-high 13 digs.
 
Smalter and Alex Harthaller had 11 kills each to pace the Mastodons with Omar Rivera dishing out 32 assists. IPFW led on service aces, 9-2, while the Hawks held a 4-3 advantage in blocks.
 
A third straight ranked opponent awaits Quincy, which will travel to Columbus to take on No. 12 Ohio State on Friday (Feb. 6) at 6 p.m. CT. The Buckeyes (6-2, 2-0 MIVA) and are in the midst of a 12-day layoff.
