Overtime Buzzer-Beater Downs Hawks at Drury

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team lost in devastating fashion on Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon at the O'Reilly Center in Springfield, Mo. as Drury's Kameron Bundy hit a half-court runner as time expired in overtime to beat the Hawks, 90-88.

The buzzer-beater erased Quincy's one-point lead that came off a nearly-impossible 3-pointer by junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central). Trailing 87-85, the Hawks struggled moving the ball against Drury's pressure. As the seconds ticked away, Eneogwe grabbed a loose ball near the right corner and hoisted a fall-away three that swished through the net with 1.6 seconds remaining.

The Panthers (14-5, 8-3 GLVC) inbounded from under their own hoop after a timeout. A pass to midcourt found Bundy, who turned and took two dribbles before heaving a 45-footer that fell through for the win.

This was the second time the Hawks (11-10, 5-6 GLVC) have lost at the buzzer in GLVC play this season after losing on a tip-in at Maryville on Jan. 15. The defeat also ended a four-game winning streak.

The Hawks led for almost the entire game, taking a 42-28 lead into halftime after shooting 50 percent (15-for-30) from the field in the first half.

Their strong play continued into the second half, building their lead to as many as 20 points on two separate occasions – the last with 13:58 to play on a jumper by sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) to give QU a 61-41 advantage.

The Panthers slowly chipped away at the lead from that point, though the Hawks' defense remained strong. Once Drury had it down to 61-46, the Hawks held the Panthers without a point for more than three minutes, but the Hawks picked up just one basket in that stretch, a mid-range jumper by redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West).

The Hawks still led by 10, 67-57, with 6:32 remaining after Eneogwe's transition layup, but the Panthers went on a 15-1 run to take a 72-68 lead with 3:18 left.

Junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) converted a put-back with 1:25 to play to cut Drury's lead to 74-73. Drew Moore missed a 3-pointer on Drury's next possession with Senor grabbing the rebound. McGaughey was fouled on the next possession and split the pair to tie the game before Moore missed another 3-pointer with 25 seconds left.

The Hawks did not get a clean look on their final possession as McGaughey sent up a 30-foot 3-pointer for the win.

Bundy hit the first shot of the overtime period – a 3-pointer which senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC) answered with his own trey. Trevor Clay then knocked down a three before Jones responded with another quick trigger to tie the game at 80-80.

Jones hit two free throws to give the Hawks an 83-81 lead with 2:07 to play, but Bundy's runner tied it at 83-83. Quincy missed on its next possession and Bundy got a second-chance on his own miss and gave the Panthers an 85-83 lead with 1:14 left.

McGaughey sank two free throws with 51 seconds left, but John Carabello did the same on the other end with 27 seconds left.

The Hawks never got into a good offensive set on their final possession, but Eneogwe's off-balance three gave them a brief lead before Bundy's heroics.

Quincy shot 50 percent (31-for-62) for the game, including a 10-for-20 performance from 3-point range. The Hawks were hurt by 18 turnovers and shooting 53.3 percent (16-for-30) from the free throw stripe. Drury, while shooting just 39.4 percent (26-for-66) from the field, connected at a 77.8 percent (28-for-36) rate from the line.

Jones led the Hawks with a career high 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting. He also matched a career best with four 3-pointers. Eneogwe recorded his first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. McGaughey finished with 17 points and six rebounds, while Senor scored 10 points and dished out a career-high eight assists.

Cameron Adams led the Panthers with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Bundy had 23 points and Drake Patterson added 12.

The Hawks continue their four-game road swing on Thursday (Feb. 5) when they take on Southern Indiana (13-6, 6-5 GLVC) in Evansville.
