Second Half Run Sends Screaming Eagles Past Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team nearly overcame a 16-point second half deficit to Southern Indiana, but ultimately fell to the Screaming Eagles, 68-62, on Thursday (Feb. 5) night in Evansville, Ind.

The Hawks (11-11, 5-7 GLVC) drop to two games behind the Screaming Eagles (14-6, 7-5 GLVC) in the race for seeding in the conference tournament with six games remaining in the regular season.

The first half of Thursday's game was a defensive struggle as neither team shot 40 percent from the field with the Hawks holding Southern Indiana to just 32.3 percent (10-for-31) shooting in the first 20 minutes. Quincy shot 39.1 percent (9-for-23), but missed all six of its 3-point attempts and was limited by 12 turnovers.

Southern Indiana took a 23-22 lead into the break after senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC), making his third straight start in place of injured Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State), converted a layup on the Hawks' final possession.

But coming out of halftime, the Eagles started lighting up the nets inside USI's Physical Activities Center. The hosts knocked down three straight 3-pointers to spur a 9-0 run that pushed their lead to 32-22 in the first two minutes of the second half.

Southern Indiana would stretch its lead to as many as 16 points on two separate occasions with layups by Gavin Schumann.

Quincy battled back into the game by locking down defensively. They held the Eagles without a field goal for a stretch of more than five minutes, but only managed to cut the deficit down to eight, 55-47.

From there, the Hawks started chipping away. Redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) beat everyone down the floor for a dunk off a pass from Jones with 2:06 to play that cut the deficit to 64-57.

The teams then traded defensive stops before the Hawks were forced to foul, but Schumann missed a pair at the line with 57 seconds left. Junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) cashed in his first field goal of the game on a 3-pointer to trim the deficit to 64-40 with 49 seconds to play.

The Hawks were able to force a USI turnover on the next possession, but Quincy threw it away to give the ball back to the Screaming Eagles. Schumann sank a couple free throws before Bruxvoort knocked down a couple with 11 seconds left to cut the deficit to four points again. Bobo Drummond's free throws with nine seconds left sealed the win for Southern Indiana.

Junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) led the Hawks offensively with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting and seven rebounds. Jones scored 12 points and dished out six assists. Bruxvoort was the third Hawk in double figures with 11 points. Redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) had pulled down game highs of 10 rebounds and three blocks to go with six points in 32 minutes off the bench. It was his first time in a reserve role this season.

The Hawks held a 35-32 edge on the glass, but turned the ball over 22 times in the game. They are averaging 21.3 turnovers per game over the last three. USI shot 60 percent (15-for-25) in the second half, while Quincy was good on 56 percent (14-for-25) of its shots.

Drummond led Southern Indiana with a game-high 18 points on 5-for-10 shooting. He hit three 3-pointers. Schumann and Austin Davis added 14 points apiece.

The Hawks have a tough task ahead on Saturday (Feb. 7), but will look to snap their two-game skid against No. 5 Bellarmine (19-2, 11-1 GLVC). The Knights toppled Truman State, 89-73, on Thursday. Saturday's tip-off at Knights Hall is set for 2:15 p.m. CT.
