Hawks Open MIVA Play With Loss at No. 14 Ball State

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team opened Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play on Friday (Jan. 30) night, but fell to No. 14 Ball State, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-14), in Muncie, Ind.
 
The Hawks (5-3, 0-1 MIVA) got five kills from freshman outside Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward) and four each from five different players, but Quincy was held to minus-.011 hitting in the match as Ball State pulled off the sweep.
 
The Cardinals (6-1, 1-0 MIVA) were scorching offensively, hitting .382 as a team, including a .450 mark in the first two sets.
 
Quincy had three players finish with four kills: sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) and junior right-side Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester Senior/San Diego City).
 
Redshirt-junior setter Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) handed out 22 assists and junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) had a team-high five digs.
 
Marcin Niemszewski led the Cardinals with nine kills while Brendan Surane had four kills, four aces and five blocks. Ball State finished with eight service aces and 10.5 blocks.
 
The Hawks return to the floor on Saturday (Jan. 31) when they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to take on No. 10 IPFW (6-2, 1-0 MIVA). The Mastodons opened conference play with a 3-0 win over Lindenwood on Friday.
