Hawks Win Fourth Straight, Pull Away From S&T, 87-70

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team was solid defensively against one of the top scoring teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and pulled away late in the second half for an 87-70 win on Thursday (Jan. 29) night in Rolla, Mo.

The win was the Hawks' fourth in a row as they upped their record to 11-9 overall and evened their GLVC record at 5-5.

Missouri S&T (8-10, 1-9 GLVC) came into the game ranked second in the league, averaging 83.6 points per game, but the Hawks held them to just 70 points and a 34.8 percent (23-for-66) performance from the field.

While the 17-point difference on the scoreboard looks like a wide margin, the game was still in the balance with seven minutes remaining as the teams traded the lead eight times in the second half.

The Hawks trailed by a two, 72-70, after a 3-pointer by Desmond Buerge with eight minutes left, but sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) converted  three-point play to give the Hawks a 63-62 lead. Senor finished one point shy of a career high with 19 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.

After Buerge's three, the Hawks held the Miners without a field goal for nearly three minutes and then continued to pile on in the midst of an 18-4 run, capped by a couple free throws by redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe). Bruxvoort scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half.

Free throw shooting has been a thorn in the Hawks' side all season, but on Thursday they knocked down 14 of their last 15 from the stripe to secure the win.

The Hawks led for most of the first half, going ahead by as many as 10 points following a Senor 3-pointer with 4:14 left. The Miners cut that down to three, 36-33, before Senor's free throws gave QU a 38-33 lead at halftime.

Quincy, playing without starting point guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) due to injury, were disjointed a bit offensively with Missouri S&T's up-and-down pace. The Hawks turned the ball over 24 times, including 14 in the second half, but overcame that by shooting 56.5 percent (26-for-46) from the field in the game. The Hawks missed just seven field goals (14-for-21) after halftime.

Quincy also shot 71.4 percent (30-for-42) from the free throw line, setting a season high for free throw makes.

Redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) scored 17 points and pulled down seven boards, while senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC) had 13 points, six assists and four steals as the other two players in double figures for QU. Jones was making his second career start, slotting into the lineup for Jackson.

Junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) also played well in extended minutes, scoring all nine of his points on 3-pointers (3-for-4). He also had four boards and four steals.

The Hawks pounded the Miners on the glass, 43-29, and held the hosts to just 10 offensive rebounds – six below their season average.

Buerge led the Miners with 15 points while Zach Ellis added 12 and Michael Nesbitt had 11.

The Hawks will look to extend their winning streak to five on Saturday (Jan. 31) when they travel to Drury (13-5, 7-3 GLVC) for a 3:15 p.m. tip-off. The Hawks can move to just one game behind the Panthers in the division standings after DU fell to Truman State, 85-81, on Thursday.
