Hawks Win Final Tune-Up Before Opening MIVA Play

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team was stout defensively and efficient on offense as the Hawks put away Hannibal-LaGrange in four sets, 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19) on Tuesday (Jan. 27) in a battle between river rivals in Hannibal, Mo.

The Hawks (5-2) hit .305 as a team while limiting the Trojans (3-5) to a .055 hitting percentage. Quincy also put down 50 kills as a team against just 18 errors, while Hannibal-LaGrange committed 25 errors with 31 kills.

Quincy was dominant in Set 1, hitting .440 as a team and holding HLGU to .033. The frame was tied at 8-8 before the Hawks scored four straight points with junior opposite hitter Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) serving. He also had three of Quincy's four kills in that stretch, with the other coming from sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby).

The Trojans had no answer for that duo on Tuesday. Gamache led the Hawks with 16 kills – a QU season high – while Kelso added 14 kills to go with a team-high four blocks. Gamache hit .414 and Kelso connected at a .478 clip.

Set 2 went back-and-forth with eight tie scores and three lead changes, but the Trojans came out on top, getting four of their 5.5 blocks on the night in that set. Shaquille Lott had seven of his team-high 11 kills for the Trojans in the second frame.

In Set 3, the Hawks reeled off a four-point rally to take a 10-6 lead with redshirt-junior setter Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) on the serve. Gamache had the final two kills in that stretch as the Hawks never trailed after that point.

The Hawks took an 11-7 lead in Set 4 with an 8-1 run and Gamache served the Hawks five straight points to take a 24-18 lead late before a service error by the Trojans gave Quincy the match. Quincy held Hannibal-LaGrange to a minus-.038 hitting percentage in the final set.

Senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) and freshman middle Matt Sindelar (New Bremen, Ohio) had seven and six kills, respectively. Freshman libero Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had a match-high 15 digs, while senior outside Andrew Cavanaugh (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) totaled 10 digs. Rogan dished out 40 assists on the night.

The Hawks and Trojans will meet up later this season at Pepsi Arena on March 5.

The Hawks will return open Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play on Friday (Jan. 30) when they travel to No. 14 Ball State (5-1) for a 6:30 p.m. CT time first serve.
