Hawks Win Third Straight, Defeat William Jewell, 78-70

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team won its third straight game on Saturday (Jan. 24) afternoon, fending off a tough William Jewell team, 78-70, in GLVC action at Pepsi Arena.

It is the Hawks' first three-game winning streak since they won five straight from Jan. 19 – Feb. 2, 2012. With the win, the Hawks moved into fifth place in the GLVC West.

The first half was a game of runs as both teams traded blows back-and-forth with the first 20 minutes featuring seven lead changes.

The Cardinals (7-10, 3-6 GLVC) scored the game's first five points before the Hawks (10-9, 4-5 GLVC) went on a 10-0 run to take a 13-8 lead after a layup by junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) with 14:45 left in the first half.

The Hawks then trailed by four, 22-18, before junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central) hit a 3-pointer and redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) threw down a put-back dunk off a miss to give the Hawks a 23-22 lead.

Quincy followed that with a highlight-reel play as McGaughey got a steal and fed it ahead to guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast). The sophomore then tossed a lob to a streaking Eneogwe, who grabbed the ball behind his head and threw it down with one hand to bring the QU faithful out of their seats.

Eneogwe's layup stretched the lead to 27-22, but the Cardinals responded and took a 39-34 lead with a 17-7 run, capped by Cyril Bilong's mid-range jumper.

Quincy would then close the half on its own 8-2 run, finished by redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe), who scored on a layup as the buzzer sounded, giving the Hawks a 42-41 halftime lead.

Quincy quickly turned the heat up on the Cardinals in the second half, forcing the visitors into two missed field goals and two turnovers while the Hawks went on a 6-1 run to start the half.

William Jewell took its first lead of the half with 13:51 remaining as D'Vante Mosby converted a layup. That would be the Cardinals' only lead of the half as the QU bench spurned a 7-0 run with baskets by senior center Josh Schaben (Defiance, Iowa/Iowa Lakes CC), senior forward Scott Hahn (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa) and Bruxvoort.

The lead stretched to as many as 12 points late in the second half with Quincy able to keep William Jewell out of the paint. The Hawks outscored the Cards in the paint, 40-26, for the game and also turned 15 WJC turnovers into 23 points.

The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 40-34, with 16 offensive boards. McGaughey finished with his third double-double of the season, going for 16 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) had scored 12 points to go with nine rebounds and Eneogwe had 13 points – 12 coming in the first half.

The Hawks shot 44.1 percent (30-for-68) from the field for the game and held the Cardinals to 43.9 percent (25-for-57) shooting.

Mosby led the Cardinals with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Patrick Whelan had 14 points. The QU bench outscored William Jewell's, 23-18.

The Hawks return to the floor on Thursday (Jan. 29) at 7:30 p.m. when they take on Missouri S&T (8-9, 1-8 GLVC), which has dropped seven straight.
