Hawks Win Home Opener Over Missouri Baptist, 3-1

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team returned home for the first time 2015 after an exhausting road trip and dispatched NAIA No. 5 Missouri Baptist, 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20), on Friday (Jan. 23) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (4-1) used solid offensive performances in the final two sets to wear down the Spartans (3-1), who suffered their first loss of the season.

Things looked promising for the hosts in Set 1 after they took a 20-17 lead with a kill by senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.). The Spartans were able to respond, though, with a 4-0 run with Chris Flood on the serve. They closed the set with two kills to win, 25-23.

The Spartans came out rolling in Set 2, taking a 5-1 lead before QU head coach Hadley Foster was forced to call a timeout. After that, the Hawks settled in and went on a 9-4 run, capped by a double block by redshirt-junior setter Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) and sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby). The teams exchanged the lead six times in the set, but the junior opposite hitter Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) put down the winning kill to finish the set.

The Hawks got into a rhythm offensively in the final two sets, hitting .321. In Set 3, the Hawks used a 4-0 run to take an 18-14 lead they would not surrender. Lawson was excellent, getting six kills on 10 swings with just one error. Gamache had four kills in the frame.

In the fourth set, the Hawks took a 19-16 lead on three straight points with Lawson on the serve. The lead stretched to 23-18 after a kill by senior outside Andrew Cavanaugh (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) and Lawson finished the match with a kill to lift QU to its fourth win of the season. Pranger finished with five kills in the set as the Hawks hit .333.

Lawson led the Hawks with 15 kills (.265) while Gamache put together a double-double with 13 kills (.269) and a match-high 16 digs. Pranger finished with 11 kills (.400) as the third QU player in double figures offensively. Kelso had a team-high six blocks to go with six kills (.333). Rogan dished out 43 assists and had seven digs.

Mico Janicijevic finished with 18 kills (.233) to lead the Spartans with Flood adding 11 (.214).

The Hawks return to the Pepsi Arena floor on Sunday (Jan. 25) at 2 p.m. when they take on St. Ambrose.
