Hawks' Road Trip Ends With Season's First Defeat

QUINCY, Ill. – When the Quincy University men's volleyball team returns from Dubuque, Iowa late Tuesday (Jan. 20) night, the Hawks will have traveled nearly 2,300 miles to play four matches over five days.

The travel finally took its toll on the Hawks, who lost to NAIA No. 4 Clarke University, 3-1 (26-24, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22), on Tuesday. Quincy was coming off a 3-0 weekend over Conference Carolina schools in North Carolina and Tennessee.

The Hawks (3-1) led for most of Set 1, going up by as many as four at 17-13, following a bad set by the Crusaders. The hosts battled back with a 5-0 run to take a 23-20 lead. QU then reeled off three straight to make it 23-23 after a block by junior opposite hitter Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central). Clarke's Anson Lindsey put down a kill before a Crusader service error tied it at 24-24, but the Crusaders scored the last two points to take the first set.

The Hawks held a lead for much of the second set and led by a 19-15 count after sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) came up with a block at the net. The Crusaders were able to tie the set at 24-24 before junior outside hitter Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) put down a kill and the Crusaders ended it with a service error to tie the match.

In the final two sets, the Hawks were not able to keep up with the Crusaders (1-0), who were playing their first match of the season. The Hawks cut a 17-12 deficit down to 17-15 in Set 3, but the Crusaders were able to build it back to a five-point advantage and take the set. The teams were tied at 15 in Set 4, but Clarke scored the next three and never surrendered the lead to claim the match.

Lawson led the Hawks with 14 kills (.206), while Kelso hit .500 with 13 kills and four blocks. Gamache added 10 kills as the third QU player in double figures offensively. Redshirt-junior setter Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) handed out 42 assists and nearly had a double-double with a team-high nine digs. Senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) had a match-high five blocks to go with five kills.

The Hawks had no answer for Tyler Mills, who had 22 kills and hit .462 for the Crusaders. Clarke hit .274 in the match while QU hit .218.

Quincy will play its home opener on Friday (Jan. 25) when it welcomes NAIA No. 5 Missouri Baptist to Pepsi Arena for a 7 p.m. first serve.
