Second Half Burst Sends Flyers Past Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team stayed close with No. 23 Lewis on Friday (Jan. 2) night at Pepsi Arena, but the Flyers used a 15-0 run in the second half to create separation on their way to a 79-59 win.

Lewis held the Hawks to 32.1 percent (9-for-28) shooting in the second half with the hosts hitting just one 3-pointer in the final 20 minutes.

The Hawks (6-6, 0-2 GLVC) took an early 5-3 lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast), but the Flyers (9-1, 1-0 GLVC) scored the next 13 points to take a 16-5 lead.

Quincy trimmed the lead down to 23-20 with 7:56 left in the first half on an 8-0 run capped by back-to-back 3-pointers by junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central) and junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State).

The Flyers bounced back with their own 8-0 run before redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) trimmed the lead back to three on a monster and-1 slam off a transition pass from Senor.

Down by nine on the final possession of the half, senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC) buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 40-34 at halftime.

The Hawks trailed by seven, 48-41, after junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) split two free throws with 14:30 remaining. The Flyers then scored on six straight possessions, including two consecutive threes by Capel Henshaw to push their lead to 63-41. The Hawks missed six straight shots in that stretch and turned the ball over three times.

The Hawks could not cut the lead to under 14 points after that run.

The Flyers shot 41.3 percent (26-for-63) from the field and out-rebounded Quincy, 47-35. Lewis also had a 16-4 edge in second chance points. QU shot 39.3 percent (22-for-56) from the field.

Eneogwe and Bruxvoort had 12 points each to pace the Hawks. Senior center Josh Schaben (Defiance, Iowa/Iowa Lakes CC) made his first career start on Friday and pulled down eight rebounds.

Guard Jeff Jarosz led the Flyers with 16 points and four assists. Ryan Jackson had 14 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Max Strus contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Sunday (Jan. 4) at 3:15 p.m. when UW-Parkside comes to visit. The Rangers (9-1, 1-0 GLVC), who are receiving votes in the latest NABC coaches poll, defeated Truman State, 77-69, on Friday night to push their winning streak to five.
