Hawks Complete Weekend Sweep With 3-0 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team completed an undefeated season-opening weekend with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-21) sweep at Lees-McRae on Sunday (Jan. 18) afternoon in Banner Elk, N.C.
 
The Hawks played three matches this weekend in three different locations in North Carolina and Tennessee, but dropped just one set to open the season with a 3-0 record.
 
The Hawks had their best blocking day of the weekend on Sunday, recording a dozen blocks, led sophomore Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), who had seven – three solo, four assisted. The 6-foot-7 middle blocker also hit .429 and recorded five kills.
 
Nine players recorded at least one kill for Quincy, which hit .322 as a team. Freshman middle Matt Sindelar (New Bremen, Ohio) led the Hawks with six kills and hit .667.
 
The Hawks opened the match on a 6-1 run, mostly with freshman outside hitter Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward) at the serve. The Hawks never trailed in the frame, though the Bobcats (0-1) were able to trim it to 14-13. QU closed the set with an 8-2 run to seal the lead.
 
In Set 2, Lees-McRae took a 10-8 lead, but the Hawks reeled off the next six points with sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) serving to take a 14-10 lead they would not give up. Sindelar closed the set with a kill off a set by Fanfulik.
 
The Hawks owned the early portion of Set 3, jumping out to a 14-9 lead before mostly trading points with the Bobcats for the remainder of the set to close it out.
 
Junior outside hitter Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./San Diego City), senior outside hitter Andrew Cavanaugh (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) and senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) each recorded four kills. Freshman libero Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had a match-high eight digs and Fanfulik handed out a match-high 16 assists.
 
Brady Markle led the Bobcats with 15 kills and a .226 hitting percentage. The Hawks limited Lees-McRae to a .091 performance as a team.
 
The Hawks will return to the court on Tuesday (Jan. 20) when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa to take on Clarke for a 6 p.m. first serve. QU plays its home opener on Friday (Jan. 23, 7 p.m.) against Missouri Baptist.
