Hawks Serve Up 14 Aces in Sweep at King

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team played a terrific all-around match and soundly defeated King University, 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-23), in nonconference action Saturday (Jan. 17) night in Bristol, Tenn.

The Hawks (2-0) pounded 14 service aces in the sweep, their most since they had 14 in a win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on March 24, 2013.

King took a 5-4 lead early in the first set before the Hawks went on a 6-1 run and took command as senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) had an ace to cap the rally. The Tornado (1-1) had it down to 18-15 before the Hawks reeled off a 7-1 burst to close the set, which was ended by three straight aces from redshirt-junior setter Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North). Rogan also had two kills in that late run.

The Tornado took a 6-3 lead in Set 2 before the Hawks scored six straight points with Pranger on the serve as sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) finished the run with two straight kills. Rogan's ace finished the set, 25-14.

In Set 3, King was able to hang with the Hawks, but a 4-0 run turned a 14-12 lead for the hosts into a 16-14 QU advantage. The Tornado had a chance to extend the match, down 24-23, but Pranger put them away off a set from Rogan.

Kelso led the Hawks with 11 kills with a .733 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) finished with eight kills. Junior opposite hitter Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) had seven kills, five aces and 12 digs, while Rogan dished out 32 assists and also had five aces.

King was led by Eddie Moushikhian, who had nine kills, but hit just .136. The Hawks out-hit the Tornado, .289 – .226.

The Hawks will look for their third straight road win on Sunday (Jan. 18) when they travel to Banner Elk, N.C. to take on Lees-McRae at 2 p.m. ET
