Hawks Open Season With 3-1 Win At Belmont Abbey

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team opened its 2015 season with a 3-1 win (25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23) over Belmont Abbey in Belmont, N.C on Friday (Jan. 16) night.

The Hawks (1-0) controlled the match throughout, hitting .292 as a team, including a .400 mark in the first two sets.

Quincy opened the first set on a 3-0 run that started with a service ace by redshirt-junior setter Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North). Senior middle John Pranger (Edwardsville, Ill.) followed with a kill and then partnered with junior opposite hitter Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) on a block.

The Hawks never trailed in the first set, going on another 3-0 run to take an 11-4 lead before Pranger closed out the frame with a kill from Rogan.

The second set was close in the early-going, but a 9-4 run capped by a Gamache kill gave the Hawks a 15-9 lead they would not relinquish as Pranger once again finished off the Crusaders (0-1) with a kill.

In Set 3, the Hawks trailed 24-21 and scored the next two points, but Belmont Abbey got a kill from Derek Sullivan to send the match to a fourth set.

Quincy took early command of Set 4, scoring five of the first six points as junior outside hitter Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) capped the run with an ace. The Crusaders battled back to take a 16-14 lead before sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) tied it at 16 with a block. The Hawks would then go on a 5-1 run to take a 21-18 lead.

The Crusaders tied the set, 23-23, but following a Quincy timeout, Belmont Abbey committed a service error and Kelso finished the match with a kill up the middle.

Lawson led the Hawks with 11 kills and two service aces. Pranger and Gamache had 10 kills apiece and Kelso finished with eight kills and three solo blocks. Rogan dished out a match-high 36 assists, while freshman libero Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) recorded 13 digs in his collegiate debut.

Anthony Pippen led the way for Belmont Abbey with 11 kills. The Hawks held the Crusaders to a .131 hitting percentage.

The Hawks will return to the floor Saturday (Jan. 17) when they take on King in Bristol, Tenn. First serve is scheduled to go up at 8 p.m. ET.
