Tennis Splits with Ashford, Lynch and Kuenzi Secure Win for Lady Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's and women's tennis teams hosted Ashford University at Reservoir Park on Wednesday (Sept. 24) at 3:00 p.m.  Both matches went down to the wire with scores of 5-4.  The QU men fell to AU, while the Lady Hawks pulled off a victory that went down to the last singles match.  

Sydney Lynch and Elizabeth Kuenzi earned four wins for the Lady Hawks (3-0).  Lynch and Amy Kuhle took the number one doubles match 8-4.  Kuenzi and Gabi Papachrisanthou won the second doubles match 8-3.  The duo of Lynch and Kuenzi were the deciding factors in singles play.  

Kuenzi's number two singles match was the second to last to finish.  The sophomore won the first set 6-2 before the match was evened by Adriana Obando with a 6-3 second set in favor of the Saints (0-2).  The Manitowoc, Wisc. native came back in the third set tiebreaker to win the set 10-7 and even the match against Ashford at 4-4.

Lynch dropped the first set in her number three singles match 7-5.  The freshman rallied to take the second set 7-5 against Carolina Monterrubio.  The Springfield, Ill. native took the last match of the day to extra points in the third set tiebreaker.  With the team victory on the line, Lynch took the third set 13-11 to secure the Lady Hawk win.

Morgan McGinnis won her singles match 6-3, 6-1 to account for the fifth point for QU.  

Ashford won the third doubles match and the first, fourth, and fifth singles matches.

The QU men picked up two wins in doubles as well.  Ian Hinkamper and Ethan Arns won the first doubles match 8-1.  Arns went on to win the third singles match in a three set tiebreaker.  Arns dropped the first set 6-3, before winning the second set 7-6.  The third set went in favor of the Quincy, Ill. native in an 11-9 victory.  Hinkamper also added a singles win in the number one spot over Gian Pico 6-0, 6-1.

The duo of Patrick Kuhle and Ryan McMillan earned the fourth win for the Hawks in the second doubles match, 9-8.

Ashford won the third doubles match and took four of six singles matches to earn the 5-4 team win.

The Lady Hawks will travel to Purdue University Calumet on Friday (Sept. 26) in Hammond, Ind.  The match is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.  The men's next match is Saturday (Sept. 27) at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, Mo.  That match will start at 1:00 p.m.
