Wakeland's Late Goal Lifts Lady Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team played many close, low-scoring games in 2013 and that seems to be the trend in the early portions of this season.

On Friday (Sept. 19) afternoon at Bellarmine, midfielder Taylor Wakeland (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) snapped a scoreless tie with a goal in the 84th minute to lift the Lady Hawks to a 1-0 win in Louisville, Ky.

Last season, the Lady Hawks played in 18 games decided by one goal or ended in draws and they have already played in three such games this season.

The win kept Quincy (4-2, 3-0 GLVC) undefeated in Great Lakes Valley Conference play and handed the Knights (4-2, 2-1 GLVC) their first loss in the conference.

The Knights seemingly had the better of the Lady Hawks for much of the game when it came to opportunities in the final third. Bellarmine held a 22-5 edge in shots for the game, including a 17-2 advantage in the second half.

The QU defense was excellent as true freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) matched a career high with seven saves to preserve her fourth clean sheet. The Lady Hawks also saved two Bellarmine shots off the line in the first half as juniors Taylor Lindwedel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) and Maxine Peat (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) kept the Knights off the board

Quincy finally capitalized when it needed to at the 83:13 mark. Wakeland pounced on a loose ball after a deflection and fired from the left side of the box past Bellarmine keeper Hannah Poteet into the right side of goal. It was her first goal of the season and the fourth in her career.

The Knights, who owned a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks, threatened twice in the next minute with Swanson saving an effort from Emily Hollander and Katie Fernandez striking the crossbar to keep the 1-0 margin.

The Lady Hawks will now look to protect their unblemished GLVC record on Sunday (Sept. 21) afternoon when they travel to McKendree for a noon kickoff with the Bearcats (1-5, 0-3 GLVC).
