Second Half Surge Sends Bulldogs Past Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – Truman State used a strong second half effort to defeat the Quincy University men's basketball team on Saturday (Dec. 6) in Kirksville, Mo., 91-76.

The Bulldogs outscored the Hawks, 53-40, over the final 20 minutes and Seth Jackson led the hosts with a career-best 33 points in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.

The Hawks (4-4, 0-1 GLVC) led by as many as five points in the first half after a 3-pointer by senior forward Scott Hahn (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa) with 11:28 left before halftime. The Bulldogs (5-2, 1-0 GLVC) responded with a 7-0 run to take a 19-17 lead before a 3-pointer by junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) gave the Hawks a one-point lead.

Later in the first half, junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) went on an individual 7-0 run that turned a 30-28 deficit into a 35-30 lead with two minutes remaining. McGaughey was 3-for-3 in that stretch and also plucked two defensive rebounds. He finished with the Hawks' first double-double of the season, going for 16 points and 11 boards.

The Hawks were outscored 8-1 in the final two minutes of the half (with the lone point coming on a McGaughey free throw) and trailed the Bulldogs, 38-36, at the intermission.

Quincy shot 48.3 percent (14-for-29) from the field in the first half, while holding the Bulldogs to 38.9 percent (14-for-36). The major disparity on the stat sheet came in the free throw column as the Bulldogs forced 10 turnovers and turned them into 10 points. Truman State had just two miscues.

The Hawks also had no answer for Jackson, who single-handedly kept Truman in the game with 20 of his 33 points coming in the first half.

After sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) tied the game at 38-38 with a layup to open the second half, the Bulldogs rallied for an 11-0 run that gave them a 49-38 lead. Patrick Burmester knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers and Reed Mells converted a three-point play to cap the run.

Quincy's deficit never slipped under double digits after that point as the Bulldogs shot 69 percent (20-for-29) from the field in the second half, including a 6-for-10 mark from 3-point range. Kyle Kanaskie hit all three of his 3-pointers in the second half and finished the game with 13 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals.

One game after their bench scored 62 points, the Hawks got 45 from their reserves on Saturday. Redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) scored 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting to go with six rebounds in 18 minutes. Des Jardins and Hahn each finished with 11 points.

Junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) scored just four points, but dished out a career-high five assists. Senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco-Hernando CC) also matched a career high with six assists to go with seven points.

The Hawks won the battle on the glass for the third straight game, 37-31. Quincy was limited by 17 turnovers and the inability to solve Seth Jackson on the defensive side. The 6-foot-4 All-GLVC guard shot 13-for-24 from the floor. Last season, Jackson averaged 18.5 points per game against the Hawks while his since-graduated teammate Mike Carlson averaged 38.5 points in two games against QU last season.

The Hawks will now have a 10-day layoff before returning to the court on Dec. 16 when they take on Robert Morris-Springfield at Pepsi Arena. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
