Hawks Hit Century Mark in Rout of RMU-Springfield

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team blitzed Robert Morris-Springfield in the second half on its way to a 101-68 win at Pepsi Arena on Tuesday (Dec. 16) night. The game was QU's final tune-up before the QU Subway Holiday Tournament this weekend (Dec. 20-21). 
 
The Hawks outscored the Eagles, 56-27, in the second half, shooting 62.5 percent (20-for-32), while limiting the Eagles (5-5) to 30 percent (9-for-30) shooting.
 
Quincy continued its incredible run of bench play, getting 52 points from the reserves. Three of the five QU players in double figures came off the bench, led by 14 points from redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe). The Hawks' bench is averaging 50.5 points over the last four games.
 
Guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) scored a career-high 13 points to go with three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 14 minutes. The junior was 4-for-5 from the field and hit two 3-pointers. Senior center Josh Schaben (Defiance, Iowa/Iowa Lakes CC) was the third bench player in double figures with 13 points and eight rebounds.
 
The Hawks got off to a slow start against the Eagles, who jumped out to a 20-12 lead at the 13:36 mark after hitting four 3-pointers in the opening minutes.
 
QU head coach Marty Bell the switched to a 2-3 zone defense after Robert Calmese started getting into the lane. The switch in defense stifled the Eagles' offense and the Hawks went on a 15-2 run to turn a 22-17 deficit into a 32-24 lead after a jumper by senior forward Scott Hahn (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa).
 
The Hawks led 45-41 at halftime after Calmese knocked down a 3-pointer to close the first half.
 
Quincy scored the first 13 points of the second half to take total control of the game as the lead stretched to 58-41. In that stretch, the Hawks forced four straight RMU misses and two turnovers, while shooting 4-for-5 from the field themselves.
 
Redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) led the Hawks with 18 ppoints, four rebounds, three blocks and two assists. Junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) had 15 points, five boards and two blocks. Junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) dished out a career-best seven assists to go with five points and four rebounds.
 
As a team, the Hawks shot 55.6 percent (40-for-72) from the field. They also out-rebounded the Eagles, 56-25, and had 27 assists on 40 made field goals.
 
Calmese led the Eagles with 23 points with Jordan Maxwell adding 18.
 
The Hawks return to Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Dec. 20) at 5:15 p.m. against Tiffin in the semifinal of the QU Subway Holiday Tournament. Kentucky Wesleyan and Hillsdale will play at 3 p.m. The consolation game is set for 3 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 21) with the championship at 5:15 p.m.
