Hawks Hold On For 77-76 Win over Tiffin

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team pulled out a 77-76 win over in-region foe Tiffin on Saturday (Dec. 20) night at Pepsi Arena in the semifinal of the QU Subway Holiday Tournament.

The game saw nine tie scores and 11 lead changes, the final one coming with 6:15 left to play as QU took a 66-65 lead on a jumper by redshirt-sophomore Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West).

Quincy (6-4) built on that lead and led by eight points with 50 seconds left, but a four-point possession by the Dragons (3-7) cut that advantage to 75-71 with 32 seconds left.

After sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) split a pair of free throws, Andy Bachman knocked down his second straight 3-pointer to trim the lead down to two, 76-74, with 23 seconds left. Junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) split two more free throws and Mike Brown hit a mid-range jumper with eight seconds left to make it 77-76.

The Dragons then fouled, but Jackson missed both free throws. Tiffin raced down the floor and Brown rose for a 3-pointer, but redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) rose even higher, swatting the shot straight down to preserve the Hawks' win.

The teams traded blows for most of the game, though Tiffin maintained the lead for much of the first half before a 21-7 run over a six-minute stretch gave the Hawks a 33-26 lead, capped by a Bruxvoort layup with 2:19 left. Quincy took a 36-34 lead into halftime and led for much of the second half.

Tiffin took its first lead of the second half with 11:41 to play on a layup by Ashton Khan, but senior forward Scott Hahn (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa) knocked down a couple free throws to re-take the lead. The teams traded the lead two more times before the Hawks took the lead for good.

McGaughey finished with his second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central) and Bruxvoort had 14 points and four rebounds apiece. Jackson had a team-high five assists.

The Hawks shot 42.4 percent (22-for-59) from the floor, while the Dragons connected on 50.9 percent (28-for-55) of their shots. The difference came at the line where QU sank 19-for-32 (59.4 percent). Tiffin was 11-for-19 (57.9 percent).

Khaleal McCormick led the Dragons with 19 points, while Bachman hit five 3-pointers for 18 points.

The Hawks will now play Kentucky Wesleyan in the QU Subway Holiday Tournament championship game on Sunday (Dec. 21) at 5:15 p.m. at Pepsi Arena. The Panthers came back to defeat Hillsdale, 80-76, in Saturday's first game. Tiffin and Hillsdale play at 3 p.m.
