Panthers Down Hawks in Subway Holiday Tournament

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team made several runs in the second half, but could not overcome a large deficit as Kentucky Wesleyan won the QU Subway Holiday Tournament championship, 95-78, on Sunday (Dec. 21) at Pepsi Arena.
 
The Hawks (6-5) fell behind in the early minutes as the Panthers (9-3) knocked down a few early 3-pointers to a quick 9-4 lead. The Hawks responded with a 7-0 run to take what would be their only lead of the game, 11-9, after a couple free throws by redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West).
 
C.J. Blackwell and Ken-Jah Bosley then knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers push the KWC lead to 15-11.
 
The 3-pointers were the story for the Panthers as they knocked down 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from long range in the game, including seven in the first half when they built their lead.
 
Kentucky Wesleyan led by as many as 17 in the first half, but the Hawks went 8-for-8 at the free throw line in the final 82 seconds to cut the deficit to 41-31 at halftime.
 
The Hawks chipped away at the lead in the second half, cutting the  lead to three points on two occasions, helped by eight points in a three-minute stretch from sophomore guard Herm Senor -II (Springfield, Ill/Southeast). Each time the Panthers were ready with a response as Marcus Fillyaw hit a 3-pointer and Devin Langford dropped in a transition layup to push the lead back to eight with 13:37 to play.
 
The Hawks had the lead back down to five points, 64-59, with 7:48 left, but Blackwell knocked down back-to-back threes to spur an 8-0 run that stretched the lead back to double digits, where it would stay for the remainder of the game.
 
McGaughey led the Hawks with 14 points (9-for-10 on free throws), leading five QU players in double figures. Senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco-Hernando CC) ahd 13 points, while Senor, junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) and redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) had 12 points apiece.
 
Bosley led the Panthers with 24 points while Blackwell contributed a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, hitting five 3-pointers. Kentucky Wesleyan shot 57.4 percent (35-for-61) from the field.
 
Bosley was named the tournament's most valuable player, while Langford was chosen to the all-tournament team for the Panthers. Bruxvoort averaged 13 points and three rebounds and was Quincy's representative to the all-tournament team. Tiffin's Khaleal McCormick and Hillsdale's Kyle Cooper rounded out that squad. Tiffin defeated Hillsdale, 79-63, in Sunday's consolation game.
 
The Hawks will take seven days from practice and competition over the Christmas holiday before returning to the floor Dec. 29 when they travel to Normal, Ill. to take on Illinois State in an exhibition against the Division I school. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
