Hawks Fall In Exhibition at Illinois State

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team lost to NCAA Division I Illinois State, 99-57, on Monday (Dec. 29) in the Hawks' final exhibition game of the 2014-15 season. It was Quincy's first game after their NCAA mandated seven-day rest period over the Christmas holiday and their final tune-up before the Great Lakes Valley Conference season starts in full force on Jan. 2.

The Hawks only had a chance to conduct a shoot-around on Monday morning in their first team activity since Dec. 21 before making the trek to Normal, Ill. to take on the Redbirds. It was a regular season game for the Missouri Valley Conference team.

Senior center Josh Schaben (Defiance, Iowa/Iowa Lakes CC) led three Hawks in double figures with 15 points on a perfect 7-for-7 shooting from the field. He played 18 minutes off the bench and collected four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

The Hawks (6-5) never led in the game as the Redbirds (8-4) led 15-4 out of the gate and held a 59-23 lead at halftime.

Illinois State shot 60.9 percent (39-for-64) from the field and knocked down seven 3-pointers. Meanwhile, Quincy connected on 40 percent (24-for-60) of its shots and managed just two threes.

Junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central) had 12 points on 6-for-12 shooting and redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) added 11 points as the other two players in double figures. Redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) had a game-high eight rebounds.

The Redbirds turned 22 QU turnovers into 30 points and led the battle on the glass, 36-30.

Justin McCloud led all scorers with 18 points off the bench for the Redbirds, who also played their final game before entering MVC play on Wednesday.

The Hawks resume their regular season on Friday (Jan. 2) when they play host to GLVC East foe Lewis (8-1) at Pepsi Arena. The Flyers were receiving votes in the latest NABC coaches poll. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
