X Lifts Hawks With Overtime Winner

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team lives on the edge. And the Hawks love every bit of it.

Sophomore forward Xhovani Dokaj (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) laced a perfectly-placed ball to the back post from the left side to deliver a 1-0 overtime win to the Hawks, who knocked out No. 4 seed Lewis in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament semifinal on Friday (Nov. 7) night in front of a large boisterous crowd at Legends Stadium.

No. 1 seed Quincy now moves on to face No. 6 seed Indianapolis in Sunday's GLVC Championship game. It is Quincy's first appearance in the conference title game since 2011 when the Hawks won the tournament, 2-1, in double overtime.

The Hawks (18-0-2) – ranked third nationally – held much of the possession against the Flyers (11-5-3), especially in the first half as the hosts out-shot Lewis, 9-1. None of those shots came on goal, however, with the Flyers sending players to deflect shots and passes once Quincy moved into the attacking zone.

The game opened up a bit more in the second half with both teams coming up with quality scoring chances. The Hawks out-shot Lewis, 10-7, in the second half.

In the 59th minute, senior forward Ethan Venvertloh (Quincy, Ill.) had a chance after recovering a loose ball in the box, but Lewis keeper Omar Ramirez made the save.

Quincy had to withstand a few waves of pressure from the Flyers, who had a better stint of passing the second half. In the 71st minute, George Thompson came free on a ball over-the-top, but QU senior keeper Drew Duncan (Florissant, Mo./CBC) denied him in a one-on-one opportunity, sending the shot wide of the post.

The Hawks had several chances in the closing minutes of regulation as the crowd tried to lift the home team to a goal that would not come until the overtime.

Early in the extra period, Lewis' Lenin Roa-Tapia ripped a shot that sailed just over the top of the crossbar.

Then, in the 97th minute, senior defender Jake Bond (O'Fallon, Mo./CBC) took the ball from Nicholas Monteiro and played a square ball to Dokaj, who ran onto the ball, took a touch and delivered a perfect left-footed strike inside the left post for the winner before sprinting for the far sideline and the Quincy student section. It was Dokaj's 15th goal of the season and Bond's second assist.

The Hawks outshot the Flyers, 21-9, while the visitors had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Quincy will now play in the GLVC Tournament championship game on Sunday (Nov. 9) at 2 p.m. at Legends Stadium. They will play No. 6 seed Indianapolis, which defeated No. 2 Drury, 1-0, in Friday's first semifinal with a late goal by Casey Zimmerman. Quincy beat UIndy, 1-0, on Oct 10 on Venvertloh's 80th-minute winner.
