Greyhounds Hand No. 3 Hawks First Loss in GLVC Final

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 3 Quincy University men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday (Nov. 9) in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship.  The University of Indianapolis was ranked sixth in the tournament and secured wins against the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Drury University before winning the GLVC Championship 3-1 over QU.  UIndy scored two goals in the first half and added some insurance late in the second half to close the door on the Hawks.

The Greyhounds (12-5-3) applied pressure on the Hawks (18-1-2) early and earned four corner kicks in the first half.  In the 22nd minute, Zak Mitiche sent a corner into the box that hung up in the wind for Max Rohda to head into the net for the first goal of the game.

In the 29th minute, Zak Mitiche sent in another corner from the left side of the goal.  Ngwese Ebangwese elevated in the box to head in the corner giving the Greyhounds a two goal lead.

Drew Duncan (18-1-2) made three saves in the first half, but allowed two goals.  Andrew Verhonik was only tested once in the first period.

The game became very chippy late in the first half as Indianapolis earned two yellow cards and Jake Bond received a yellow for Quincy.

The Hawks came out of halftime with a lightning pace.  The Hawks spent most of the beginning of the first half camped in the offensive half of the field.  Jake Bond sent in a cross in the 49th minute a UIndy defender attempted to clear.  Taylor Reis intercepted the pass and sent the ball to the back of the net inside the near post.  The momentum began to shift as the Quincy crowd was revived by Reis' fourth goal of the season.

The QU attack came to a screeching halt when Jake Bond received his second yellow to earn a red card in the 73rd minute.  With the Hawks down to 10 men, UIndy began to mount dangerous counter-attacks.

The Greyhounds scored an insurance goal to seal up the GLVC Championship in the 82nd minute.  Ngwese Ebangwese received a long pass from Daniel Wellman that he centered to Jacob Meyer 12 yards out.  Meyer finished from there to give UIndy the 3-1 lead.

Andrew Verhonik kept the Hawks out of the net the rest of the way.  The Greyhound keeper finished with five saves in the final.

The No. 3 Hawks await their fate in the NCAA Tournament when the Selection Show airs tomorrow night (Nov. 10) at 6:30 p.m. CST.  QU was ranked first in the Midwest Regional Rankings last week.  The top five teams in the Midwest Region make the NCAA Division II Tournament.  The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Selection Show can be seen here:
