Hawks Win First NCAA Tournament Game in Program History

QUINCY, Ill. - The Top-seeded Quincy University men's soccer team won their first NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament game in school history on Sunday (Nov. 16) against No. 4-seed Drury University, 2-1.  Xhovani Dokaj scored the game-winner in the 66th minute to lift QU with his ninth game-winner of the season.  The Hawks outshot DU, 15-10, with six shots on goal to the Panthers' three.  Quincy also had 10 corner kicks while Drury took four corners.  

The fifth ranked Hawks (19-1-2) put the pressure on the Panthers (16-5) early.  Jordan Roberts hit the post from the top of the box in the second minute and Artan Emini's shot was blocked out of play for a corner kick in the third minute.  

The Hawks took four corners in the first 25 minutes of play. 

Taylor Reis put a corner from Steve McAnany off the crossbar in the 25th minute.

Jordan Roberts put a shot on goal that was stopped by Logan Ponche in the 26th minute for the lone shot on goal and save of the first half.

Alec Nagel gave the Hawks a scare late when he put a shot off the crossbar in the 39th minute.

Pace picked up in the second half as Xhovani Dokaj took a shot that was saved by Ponche in the 48th minute.  

After an offside by Drury, Artan Emini was brought down in the box attempting a shot to earn a penalty kick for the Hawks.  Steve McAnany converted for QU to give the Hawks the, 1-0, lead in the 50th minute.

Drury countered quickly as Jack Mathis launched a shot that was saved by Drew Duncan.  A corner kick ensued and Drury could not convert but collected the ball on the far right side.  Alec Nagel centered the ball to Brett Steere who finished to the near post in the 55th minute.

Xhovani Dokaj answered for the Hawks in the 66th minute when he collected a ball at the top of the box.  Dokaj touched the ball back to the right and finished off the right post and in from 18 yards out.

McAnany sent in a corner late in the 84th minute that Xhovani Dokaj redirected on goal from five yards out, but it was cleared off the line by Jack Mathis.

The Panthers sent two headers toward the goal in the final five minutes.  One went wide and the other was saved by Drew Duncan.  

Duncan finished the game with two saves in his 19th victory between the pipes.  Logan Ponche made three saves for the Panthers.

The Hawks move on to the NCAA Round of 16 to play No. 3-seed Saginaw Valley State University on Friday in Tahlequah, Okla.  Game time is to be announced.
