Hawks Down Cardinals for Midwest Region Crown, 3-0

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The top-seed Quincy University men's soccer team is now one of eight teams left in the NCAA Division II National Tournament after a shutout win over three-seed Saginaw Valley State University on Friday (Nov. 21) to claim the Midwest Region Championship.  QU stayed true to form as they have all season with a strong defensive effort and a potent offensive attack.  The Hawks scored three goals in the second half against SVSU for a 3-0 win and the right to play in the NCAA Division II National Tournament Quarterfinals.

Drew Duncan (20-1-2) was called on three times in the first half to make a save against the No. 21 Cardinal (14-5-2) offense.  Duncan was up to the task which allowed the No. 5 Hawks (20-1-2) to apply offensive pressure on counter-attacks.  Jordan Roberts had a breakaway in the 30th minute that the keeper came out to stop making a diving save.  QU could not convert on their two shots on goal to send the game to half tied 0-0.

SVSU led the first half shots on goal total three to two.  The Hawks took six corners in the first period and were also called for six fouls to lead both categories six to two.

The Hawks stepped on the gas in the second half earning two corner kicks in the first three minutes.  Jordan Roberts had the ball on the right edge of the box and beat a defender in the 49th minute.  Roberts drew the keeper towards him and played a low cross right in front of the goal mouth to Xhovani Dokaj for a tap-in goal.  The goal was Dokaj's 17th tally of the season and his 10th game-winner.

QU was not finished as Artan Emini came down the right wing and took a shot that the keeper stopped and deflected out of play for a corner.  Steve McAnany sent a cross that got lost in a sea of bodies.  Emini found it at his feet and played a ball to Chris Garavaglia in the middle of three Cardinal defenders.  Garavaglia fired from six yards out deflecting the ball off a defender and tucking it inside the right post in the 63rd minute.  It was the senior center back's first goal of the season and second of his career.  His first goal of his career came against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Sept. 20, 2013 on a header off a corner.

Jordan Roberts struck in the 87th minute to seal the game.  Roberts out-paced a defender down the wing and fired a shot off the keeper.  He gathered his own rebound and tapped it in for a 3-0 Hawks lead.  The goal was the senior striker's 22nd of the season.

Duncan was called into action once in the second half.  Duncan finished with four saves in his NCAA Division II-leading 15th shutout of the season.

The No. 5 Hawks await the winner of No. 23 Fort Hays State University and No. 12 Northeastern State University who play tonight.  The NCAA Division II National Tournament Quarterfinal match will take place on Sunday (Nov. 23) at 1 p.m. CDT in Tahlequah, Okla.
