Lady Hawks Speed Past Eagles 100-58

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a high-octane offense that exploded for 100 points against Avila University on Friday night (Nov. 14).  It was also their first game of the QU Subway Tip-off Classic.  QU had five players score in double figures in the 100-58 victory.  The Lady Hawks shot 55% from the field and 50% from three on the night.  QU gathered 35 rebounds to the Eagles' 29 boards.  The Lady Hawks also turned in 28 assists to 11 turnovers.  The Lady Hawks stole the ball 19 times from AU and scored 38 points off of turnovers.  

The Lady Hawks (1-0) took a 15-point lead halfway through the first half.  The QU lead climbed to 22 points before the Eagles (2-1) started a comeback.  

Avila chipped away to a 12-point deficit, but Kara Gerbus hit a three-pointer before the half to give QU the 48-33 lead heading into the locker room.

The Eagles were able to pull within 13 points with under 14 minutes to play, but the Lady Hawks went on a 13-point run to take a 26-point lead.  The Lady Hawks went on another 16-point run to pull ahead 89-50.  

Megan Wienstroer drove the lane with 13 seconds left for a layup to give QU 100 points in their first game of the season.

The Eagles were led by Rebekah Capeder with 18 points.  Michaela Brinkley scored 12 points and Luci Sarcone added 10 points for the Eagles.

The Lady Hawks were led by sophomore transfer Nikia Edom with 17 points.  Freshman Anika Webster was two rebounds away from a double-double with 12 points and eight boards.  Carly Beebe scored 15 points off the bench and Kara Gerbus added 13 points.  Carly Bettencourt totaled 11 points as the Lady Hawks fifth double-digit scorer.  

Maggie Cunningham set a career mark with nine assists in the game.  Cunningham's previous career mark was seven assists against Maryville University on Feb. 22, 2014.

The Lady Hawks will face Missouri Western State University in the finale of the QU Subway Tip-off Classic.  The game will take place in Pepsi Arena tomorrow night (Nov. 15) with tip-off scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
