Lady Hawks Win QU Subway Tip-off Classic with 77-70 Win over the Griffons

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team won the 15th Annual QU Subway Tip-off Classic for the second consecutive season on Saturday night (Nov. 15) with a 77-70 win over Missouri Western State University.  QU knocked down 39% from the field with 43% made from three.  MWSU shot 40% from the field and 39% from beyond the three-point line.  The Lady Hawks were led by Maggie Cunningham who scored 20 points including 12 of 12 from the free-throw line.  Cunningham was named the tournament MVP.  Nikia Edom 11 points tonight and netted 17 points last night to earn all-tournament honors.  

The Lady Hawks (2-0) and the Griffons (1-1) went back and forth for the first ten minutes of the game with both teams struggling to find their shot.  

Anika Webster provided a lift off the bench with some key offensive rebounds including a put-back with 9:38 to play in the first half to give QU a 16-11 lead.  

The lead grew to seven points after a pair of Maggie Cunningham free-throws, but the Griffons stormed back to within three points.  Maggie Cunningham answered with a three with 2:52 left before half.  

Tiara Hall hit a jumper with 33 seconds left to send the Griffons to halftime down by four points, 30-26.

LaQuinta Jefferson came out of halftime to score the first four points for the Griffons to tie the game at 30-30.

Sarafina Handy hit a couple of three-point field goals leading to a Missouri Western seven-point lead.  Handy hit another three with 14:37 to play to give the Griffons their largest lead of the night at eight points.

Then, the Lady Hawks went on the attack.  Anika Webster converted a layup and QU made three free-throws to trail by three points with 12:10 to play.

LaQuinta Jefferson hit a three to double the Griffons lead.  

The Lady Hawks countered with a 10-point run with Erin Mennemeyer supplying six points including a smooth hook shot from the left side of the rim.  

The Lady Hawks expanded their lead to 14 points with 3:56 to play and they would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

LaQuinta Jefferson hit a three with 1:10 remaining to cut the lead to four points.  Carly Bettencourt answered with a three-pointer in the next possession for the Lady Hawks.  Jefferson responded with another three to give her 24 points on the night.

Two free throws by Maggie Cunningham and a Nikia Edom make from the charity stripe finished the game to give the Lady Hawks a 77-70 win.

Maggie Cunningham led the way for the Hawks with 20 points along with five assists.  Anika Webster scored 13 points off the bench with seven rebounds.  Nikia Edom finished with 11 points in 21 minutes after spending much of the second half in foul trouble.  Erin Mennemeyer notched 10 points with seven rebounds.  Carly Bettencourt finished with eight points and led the team with six assists.  

The Lady Hawks will travel to Missouri Southern State University on Saturday, Nov. 22 for a game starting at 1 p.m. CST.
