Lions Down Lady Hawks 56-49

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season to Missouri Southern State University on Saturday (Nov. 22) 56-49.  MSSU out-rebounded QU 44 to 39 including 15 offensive boards.  The Lions also secured nine steals against the Lady Hawks.  Both teams struggled from the field as the Lions shot 33.3% and the Lady Hawks hit 35.8% of their shots.  MSSU finished with 15 second chance points and 14 points off of turnovers.

The Lady Hawks (2-1) and Lions (4-0) traded the lead for much of the first half until there was seven minutes to play.  MSSU went on a six-point run to jump out to a 20-15 lead. 

The Lions led 25-17 before Tori Kuhn and Kara Gerbus hit jumpers to send the Lady Hawks to the locker room down 25-21.

The Lady Hawks were one of seven from three and did not attempt a free throw in the first half.  

Carly Bettencourt hit a three a minute and a half into the second half to give the Lady Hawks a 28-27 lead.  Bettencourt hit a layup to extend the lead to three points.  

Nicole Hartzog scored four straight points for the Lions to retake the lead with 14 minutes to play.

Nikia Edom answered with a jumper to reclaim the lead for the Lady Hawks.  It would be their last lead of the game.

The Lions climbed out to a 47-40 lead with six and a half minutes left in the game.  Anika Webster hit a free throw and a three to pull within three points with five minutes left.  Tori Kuhn added a jumper in the paint with just over three minutes to play to make it a one point game, 47-46.

MSSU scored eight straight points to take a 55-46 lead with a minute and a half to play.  

Carly Bettencourt hit a three with a minute to play, but the Lady Hawks could not mount another comeback.

The Lions won 56-49 after a late free throw.  MSSU was led by Nicole Hartzog with 17 points.  Sharese Jones recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.  Shawnee Phillips added 10 points for the Lions.

Anika Webster led the way for the Lady Hawks with 12 points earning her third straight double-digit scoring effort to start the season.  Carly Bettencourt added 10 points off the bench hitting two of QU's four threes in the game.  Tori Kuhn notched eight points and eight rebounds in 31 minutes of play.

The Lady Hawks had 12 assists and 18 turnovers in the game.  QU shot 26.7% from three-point range.

QU travels to Warrensburg, Mo. on Monday (Nov. 24) to play at the University of Central Missouri.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
