Quincy, Rockhurst Play to Scoreless Draw

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team played Rockhurst to a scoreless draw in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Friday (Oct. 3) night in Kansas City, Mo.

The teams entered the game tied for second in GLVC play with identical 5-1 records and they remain tied in the standings.

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) and the QU defense recorded their third straight clean sheet and their seventh of the season. Swanson made six saves in 110 minutes in goal, including one in each of the overtime periods.

The game was a back-and-forth affair with Rockhurst leading in shots, 17-10.

Quincy (6-3-1, 5-1-1 GLVC) had a great opportunity in the eighth minute as sophomore forward Caroline Basler (Pevely, Mo./St. Pius X) had her shot deflect off the crossbar. The ball stayed in play for freshman striker Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic), who had her shot saved by RU keeper Caitlin Winschel.

Rockhurst (8-1-1, 5-1-1 GLVC) out-shot Quincy 9-4 in the second half and had the better of the chances, but Quincy's defense remained organized.

In the first overtime, junior midfielder Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) had a header in front of goal, but it was saved by Winschel, who had five stops in goal.

The QU defense fended off four Rockhurst corner kicks in the second overtime period to keep the hosts off the board. Rockhurst had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks for the game.

Quincy will now travel to Liberty, Mo. on Sunday (Oct. 5) when it takes on William Jewell for a noon kickoff. The Cardinals (4-2-3, 3-2-2 GLVC) took a 1-0 loss to Truman State on Friday.
