Maryville's Early Goal Holds Up Against Lady Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team played from behind for most of the night and was not able to net the equalizer, falling to Maryville, 1-0, at Legends Stadium on Friday (Oct. 24) night.

The loss snapped a 21-game unbeaten streak at home in Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season games for the Lady Hawks. Their last defeat home defeat in a conference game came more than three years ago on Oct. 16, 2011 against Bellarmine.

The Saints (6-6-3, 5-6-2 GLVC) earned much of the possession in the early minutes and immediately capitalized by earning a corner kick. The Lady Hawks (7-7-2, 6-5-2 GLVC) were not able to get a foot on the ball for a clearance and Shannon Foley finally struck a shot from eight yards out through traffic that sneaked inside the near post at the 4:02 mark.

The Saints continued to keep the pressure on for much of the first half, though Quincy had a 5-4 edge in shots. The Lady Hawks had a good chance in the 25th minute, but a shot by junior midfielder Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) went just over the crossbar.

In the second half, the Lady Hawks garnered much of the possession and took the game to the Saints, but the visitors remained organized at the back. Markway's close-range header off a corner kick in the 59th minute was stopped by Maryville keeper Bailey Doerflinger.

Quincy freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) and Doerflinger had four saves apiece.

The Lady Hawks held a slight lead in shots, 9-8, and Maryville owned the edge in corner kicks, 7-3.

The Lady Hawks will now hit the road on Sunday (Oct. 26) when they travel to Missouri-St. Louis (6-8-1, 4-8-1 GLVC). The Tritons fell to Truman State, 1-0, on Friday.
