Lady Hawks Drop 2-1 Battle To No. 12 UW-Parkside

QUINCY, Ill. – For the second time on their weekend swing to the northern stretches of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, the Quincy University women's soccer team fell victim to a second-half goal as No. 12 UW-Parkside scored on a penalty kick to beat the Lady Hawks, 2-1, on Sunday (Oct. 19) afternoon.

The Rangers (12-0-2, 10-0-2 GLVC) entered the game atop the GLVC standings while the Lady Hawks (7-6-2, 6-4-2 GLVC) are in a battle to finish in the top four and host a GLVC Tournament game.

The Rangers scored both of their goals outside of free play as Emily Konior drilled a free kick from 30 yards after a QU foul to take a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.

UWP continued to attack, but the Lady Hawks picked up the equalizer in the 32nd minute when freshman forward Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic) scored her fourth goal of the season in the 32nd minute. It was her second goal of the weekend.

The game remained tied into halftime, but freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) came under fire, facing 12 shots in the first half.

The Rangers kept up their attack in the second half and were rewarded in the 74th minute as a QU foul sent Konior to the penalty spot. Konior converted for her eighth goal of the season.

After that, the Lady Hawks had one more chance at a second equalizer, but Rief's shot in the 88th minute went wide.

The Rangers held a 28-4 advantage in total shots and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Swanson made nine saves in the game, while her counterpart, Mallory Geurts, did not have any saves.

The Lady Hawks will look to bounce back on Friday (Oct. 24) when they take on Maryville at Legends Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
