Lewis Downs Visiting Lady Hawks, 2-1

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Lewis on Friday (Oct. 17) night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action in Romeoville, Ill.

The Lady Hawks (7-5-2, 6-3-2 GLVC) will have an uphill battle to host a first round GLVC Tournament game as they currently sit in fifth place behind Truman State (8-2-1) with a trip to conference leader UW-Parkside (9-0-2) looming on Sunday (Oct. 19).

On Friday, it was the Flyers (3-6-4, 3-5-3 GLVC) who threatened early, testing QU freshman keeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) in the fifth minute. Five minutes later, Susan Thomas' shot struck the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.

Junior defender Taylor Lindwedel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) tested Lewis keeper Mara Bennett for the first time in the 17th minute, but the Flyers worked the counter-attack to open the scoring as Meg Carmody found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Flyers – who outshot the Lady Hawks, 8-5, in the first half – took their 1-0 lead into halftime.

Quincy looked like the brighter side after the break, peppering Lewis with five shots in the first 12 minutes, finally capitalizing at the 56:05 mark.

The Lady Hawks earned a free kick and junior Maxine Peat (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) lofted a ball into the box where freshman forward Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic) won it and scored in traffic to equalize. It was Rief's third goal of the season and the second assist for Peat.

Lewis then was able to apply pressure and scored the game-winner in the 76th minute as Lauren Grady scored on a rebound of a shot by Susan Thomas.

The Lady Hawks had one final opportunity in the 90th minute, but the shot by freshman midfielder Natalie Quisenberry (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) went wide.

The Flyers out-shot the Lady Hawks, 14-11, in the game and had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Swanson made five saves for Quincy, while Bennett stopped two shots.

The Lady Hawks will kick off with UW-Parkside on Sunday (Oct. 19) at 2:30 p.m. The Rangers defeated Truman State, 2-1, on Friday.
