Personal: Akalanu is from Crystal Lake, Illinois, and attended Carmel Catholic High School. He is the son of John and Shawna Akalaonu and has two siblings, Christian and Vivian. During his high school career, Akalanu helped his team win two ESCC Purple Conference championships.

Away from the field, Akalanu enjoys golfing and playing basketball. His favorite athlete is Jeremiah Smith and his favorite sports team is the Chicago Bears.
