QUINCY, Ill - Quincy and William Jewell battled to a hard-fought 0-0 draw Saturday afternoon at Jack Mackenzie Field, with the Hawks controlling much of the attacking play while the Cardinals continued to battle despite playing a significant portion of the match shorthanded.
Quincy generated 28 shots throughout the match, putting 10 on target, while William Jewell managed just three total shots and two shots on goal. The Hawks also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks and forced William Jewell goalkeeper Aidan Smith into 10 saves.
The first half saw both teams settle into a physical contest, with William Jewell picking up several early fouls and Quincy working to create opportunities in the attacking third. Leo Cann gave the Hawks one of their better chances of the opening half when his shot in the 31st minute was saved by Smith. Isaac Guillory also tested the Cardinals' defense late in the half, but his attempt went wide.
The match took a major turn in the 35th minute when William Jewell's Kaleb Fannin was shown a red card, leaving the Cardinals with 10 players for the remainder of the match. Quincy continued to apply pressure, but William Jewell's defense remained organized and kept the Hawks off the scoreboard.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Cardinals continued to fight and kept the match within reach. Jake Offerman made two saves for Quincy, including stops on attempts from Hugo John Holmberg Nordenberg and Maxwell Evanoff in the first half.
Quincy came out aggressively after halftime, producing 23 shots in the second half alone. Cann repeatedly threatened the Cardinals' goal, including several shots that forced Smith into saves. Carter Venvertloh and Josh Nwosu also created opportunities as the Hawks continued to push forward.
The Hawks' pressure increased late in the match, particularly after William Jewell was reduced to nine players. Elias Isaac Munoz received a second red card in the 76th minute, giving Quincy an 11-on-9 advantage for the final stretch of the contest.
Quincy immediately generated multiple chances after the second red card. Rylan Fischer, Cann, Colin Kurk, Venvertloh, Nwosu, Bringedal and Guillory all recorded attempts during the closing minutes as the Hawks continued to search for the game-winning goal.
William Jewell goalkeeper Aidan Smith continued to keep the Cardinals alive, making several key saves throughout the second half. Nwosu had an attempt saved in the 89th minute, while Cann and Guillory continued to pressure the William Jewell defense in the final minutes.
Despite outshooting William Jewell 28-3 and holding the Cardinals to only two shots on goal, Quincy was unable to find the breakthrough. The Hawks finished with 10 shots on target and eight corner kicks, while Jake Offerman and the Quincy defense secured another clean sheet.
The result moves Quincy to 5-1-4 overall and 4-0-3 in conference play. The Hawks will continue conference play as they travel to the University of Missouri - St. Louis on Wednesday, September 30th for a start time of 7:30 PM.Â
