QUINCY, Ill. – Eddie Johnson of Quincy University football has been named the QU Toyota Star of the Week after turning in a standout defensive performance in the Hawks' 34-27 Homecoming victory over Lincoln University of Missouri on Saturday.

The win gave Quincy its first victory of the season while moving the Hawks to 1-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. QU led 21-13 at halftime and built its advantage to 34-20 in the third quarter before holding off the Blue Tigers in the fourth to secure the seven-point victory.

Johnson was all over the field for the Quincy defense, tying for the game high with 11 tackles, including seven solo stops and four assists. He also recorded a tackle for loss of three yards and came up with the biggest defensive play of the afternoon, returning the first interception of his collegiate career 45 yards for a touchdown.

With Quincy trailing 13-7 midway through the second quarter, Johnson stepped in front of a pass at the Lincoln 45-yard line and took it all the way back for the score. The 45-yard pick-six gave the Hawks a 14-13 advantage with 6:47 remaining in the half, putting Quincy back in front for good.

Johnson continued to make his presence felt throughout the game as the Hawks limited Lincoln to 347 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers. The Quincy defense finished with five tackles for loss, a sack and two interceptions in the victory.

Through three games this season, Johnson has totaled 31 tackles, including 10 solo stops and 21 assists, along with 3.5 tackles for loss, half a sack, one interception and one quarterback hurry. He has now recorded 11 tackles in each of the Hawks' last two games.

Quincy returns to QU Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 26, for its final non-conference matchup of the season against Wayne State (Mich.). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
