ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team remained unbeaten in GLVC play Wednesday night, scoring three times in the second half to earn a 3-1 road victory over Lewis University at Lewis Stadium.
The win moved Quincy to 4-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play, while Lewis fell to 2-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the GLVC.
Neither side was able to break through during the opening 45 minutes. Quincy controlled much of the attacking pressure, holding a 5-3 advantage in shots and earning four first-half corner kicks.
Josh Nwosu put the Hawks' lone shot on goal of the half on frame in the 22nd minute, but the match remained scoreless at the break.
It did not stay that way for long.
Just 38 seconds into the second half, Nwosu set up
Leo Cann for the opening goal, giving Quincy a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Cann's sixth of the season and marked his second straight match with a goal after scoring the game-winner against No. 13 Missouri S&T.
Lewis answered in the 57th minute, converting a penalty kick to level the match at 1-1.
Quincy regained control in the 70th minute.
Carter Venvertloh found the back of the net at the 69:43 mark, putting the Hawks back in front 2-1. It was Venvertloh's first goal of the season and fifth of his career, while also standing as the second game-winning goal of his career.
The Hawks added insurance less than seven minutes later. Cann helped create the opportunity this time, setting up
Erik Abraham for a finish at the 76:28 mark. The goal was the first of Abraham's collegiate career, extending the Quincy advantage to 3-1.
Quincy finished the night with a 13-6 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, while also holding a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Cann led the way with three shots, two on goal, one goal, and one assist, while Nwosu added an assist on the opening tally.
The Hawks return to action Saturday when they travel to Kansas City, Missouri, to take on Rockhurst University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 PM from Bourke Field, following the women's match.
