QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team picked up its biggest win of the young season Saturday afternoon at Legends Stadium, knocking off No. 13 Missouri S&T, 1-0, and handing the Miners their first loss of the season.
The Hawks improved to 3-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in GLVC play, while Missouri S&T dropped to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
Quincy was the more dangerous side throughout much of the opening half, outshooting the Miners 8-2 over the first 45 minutes.
Leo Cann produced the best chance of the half in the 23rd minute, putting an attempt on goal that was turned away, as the two sides entered halftime scoreless.
The breakthrough finally came in the 60th minute.
Jose Perez started the attack before finding
Rylan Fischer, who threaded a beautiful ball through the Missouri S&T defense and into the path of Cann. Cann finished the opportunity at the 59:23 mark to give Quincy the 1-0 advantage.
The goal was Cann's fifth of the season, continuing a strong start that has included his first career hat trick earlier this year against St. Cloud State. Fischer collected his second assist of the season, while Perez picked up his third.
Missouri S&T pushed forward looking for an equalizer over the final 30 minutes, but the Quincy defense held firm. The Miners generated seven second-half shots after managing only two in the opening period, but finished the match with just one shot on goal. Their best late opportunity came in the 85th minute, when a shot from Jake Salazar-Blair was cleared away for a team save to preserve the lead.
The Hawks finished with a 13-9 advantage in total shots and a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. Cann led the attack with five shots and put four on frame.
The clean sheet marked Quincy's second shutout of the season, with the Hawks keeping the nationally ranked Miners off the scoreboard for the full 90 minutes.
Quincy now returns to the road for more conference action, traveling to Romeoville, Illinois, to take on Lewis University. Kickoff against the Flyers is scheduled for 7:30 PM from Lewis Stadium.
